Tom,

I found this tomato (and the other one
on the plate as well) to be very nice,
sweet, flavorful, and having very thin,
tender skin for a "paste" tomato.

The rest of the Opalkas in my garden
will go on top of salads ... after surrendering
their scant few seeds.

Fellas,
Thanks for the reminder of the low seed output
from Opalka. DW and i will be tasting our first
few ever, tomorrow. At least there should be many
samples. Thanks again for those seeds Tom....jj61

Those look great, I plan to grow Opalka next year. I grew a Variety called Dick's Tomato this year that was given to me and It's a good paste tomato, I want to grow Opalka side by side next year with it.

Mark Korney posted some pictures of Opalka and Wagner's Pink Italian over at GW tonight.

The Wagner's look really awesome. Have you guys ever seen those or grown them?

Mark also comments that he doesn't remember Opalka having green shoulders and asked me where I got the seeds. I did pick'm a little green because it rained a couple of inches Friday and I didn't want them to plum bust open (they already were starting to skin split on me). But they do naturally look a little green shouldered. Is that characteristic? Or do I have something off a little.

I don't want to name the nice fellow in New Jersey who sent me the seed if it turns out it's not right. The tomatoes are great tasting and all. But if they're not true Opalka, I'll try some different seeds next year. I want a few true Polish varieties to grow year to year.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, and take a look at Korney's paste tomato pics over at GW near the end of the Heidi thread. Very nice stuff.

Papa,
just seeing your last post now. Your pastes do look
a bit more on the Jersey Devilish side. My Opalkas
from Tommy Trees are much more true to form.
Compact and slightly irregular plums. No hint of
the length or pointed tail that your photos show.

Anyway Tom, my wife has found her new favorite
salad tomato todate. Will have to grow much
more next year. Excellant and sweet. Had a thicker
skin than I anticipated but still a treat. Light on
seeds is a fact. Need to start saving soon as they
are growing in an in-law's garden and will dissappear
in the twinkling of an eye....JJ61

Tom,

I believe I got the Opalka from Richard B., Little Ferry, NJ. He also sent the Heidi. Both seed produced good quality plants whether they appear to be absolutely true to form or not.

I have some of both getting dead ripe, and will take some more photos this weekend in a side-by-side comparison. Also, some Polish Pastel from another seed source will be ripe at the same time.
