Favorite varieties in containers
I'm guessing that many people have asked this question before, and I did a quick search and couldn't find much. I'd love to hear heirlooms that can grow well in containers (small plants would be a plus, or at least not huge plants) I also am looking for pointers about favorites for flavor. So far I'm thinking about:
Grub's Mystery Green Sungold Black Cherry Sweet Beverly Lime Green Salad and the varieties I grow out from the dwarf project. What are some of your favorites to grow in containers? Also, all cherries can be grown in containers, right? Taryn |

Taryn, any tomato variety can be grown in a 5 gal container. The only limiting factor is your location and length of your growing season. The weather in my location is similar to what you have.
Go to Search and select Advance search. In User Name put Amideutch. Below that in the "Search in Forum(s)" highlight "Photo Gallery" Click Search Now and go through and look at the different threads. I posted a lot of pictures as to what I grow in containers and how. Hope this helps. Ami

As is always suggested, Tatianastomatobase has a list of dwarf tomatoes under reports and queries section. I have grown both sungold and black cherry in containers. Sungold works well, but black cherry sends out very long branches, so you'll need a good support system. Lime green salad is a nice compact plant. I grew a red cherry called Koralik that was a smallish plant that produced excellent tasting small red fruit. I would include New Big Dwarf, a great tasting compact red tomato that predates the Dwarf Project (unless you want 2 greens, of course).

Casserole- I don't have much experience with growing tomatoes in containers. Before I was a user in Tomatoville, and before I knew to get great tomatoes you had to do more than chuck a seedling in some dirt and water it, I grew a couple white cherries in pots on the deck. I forget what variety... I grew them in teensy tiny pots, and the plants probably each produced a dozen tomatoes and then died. Boy has my tomato knowledge grown since then... I also have lots of experience growing dwarf tomatoes indoors in winter, but thats just to keep my gardening cravings at bay in winter. I have lots of different pot sizes... I have some huge buckets that I am going to drill three holes in the sides, hang, and grow a tomato out of each hole. Then I have some smaller, 3-4 gallon black pots that I will grow dwarfs in. I understand Black pots can burn roots, but is that true in a cool climate like Seattle?
Ami, thanks I'll check it out! Good to hear you have similar weather and climate as me. Nancyruhl- hey, I think I have some seeds for Koralik somewhere in my stash! And yesterday I started combing through Tatiana's Tomatobase for my 2012 season, so I'll go read the dwarf section. Tatiana rocks! Thanks guys. So basically can I grow most any tomatoes in containers? Even beefsteaks? Thanks again, Taryn |
