Default Zone 8-9 What to Sow in June?

Hello, I am looking for advice or a good guide as to what seeds to start during each month, June especially. Every guide seems to be different and it is hard to know what I should really be doing. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Garden On,
Emily

Hi Emily,

There are lots of tables out there. June is getting a little later in warm season planting schedule for zones 8 and 9 I think. Time and experience will help as you learn how things do in your own micro-climate. For a start you might try the planting calculators at Johnny's Seeds. I have found them helpful. They provide schedules based on your frost dates.

Also found this page for Sacramento garden schedule. They indicate they adapted it from infor from UC Davis...

This site has tables for various zones... http://www.thevegetablegarden.info/planting-schedules

Good fortunes.....

Field peas/cow peas/southern peas and okra do well when planted in hot months of June and July in our zone 9 heat.

RebelRidin thanks for the links. I think you are right when you say I just need to experiment and see what works. I wanted a quick answer, do this now. The links provided me with a nice list of a variety of veggies to start. I am a little confused about the dates. Do they mean start from seed or plant as little plants?

Jerryinfla, I will have to try peas and okra and see how they grow.

I use this chart, along with the Sacramento planting guide posted previously. I live in zone 8B http://mastergardeners.org/warm-cool-veg-charts

Irukasgirl, I like this chart. One think I never understand about the charts is what they mean by a check mark, sow, transplant...This explains it all. Now I need to find a good place to buy seeds.

The tables have footnotes or another indicator for direct sowing or transplant. I particularly like the ones at Johnny's because they give actual dates to guide you once they have your frost date. That table listed by irukasgirl should be very helpful.

Thats a good suggestion. I believe the chart is specific to Santa Clara county and they have a great website for their master gardener program at the link above.
Depending on where you are, I'd recommend looking at the California wide planting chart which i suspect was the starting point for the Sacramento and Santa Clara ones. Its available on the UC Davis master gardener site at
