The Pedigree of Yukon Gold

Since I was kindly given the job of moderator of the potato forum, I want to offer many avenues to jump start lively discussion about all things potatoey. I wrote on a previous post the need to show parental background in regards to saving true seed from potatoes (TPS). Note that Yukon Gold is almost a yellow fleshed Katahdin by descent. Enjoy!

As you look at the pedigree of Yukon Gold, notice that the famale parent is always first. The year of release is listed. The country which developed the line is listed too. The parental lines jump around a bit, but I think you can visualize the tremendous work of many people over the centuries in creating potatoes that we admire.

what does that mean? that it has 2 ID's? or is Chippewa = some combo of USDA 40568 x USDA 24642 x USDA 42672 ?

It was clear to me but I can see why it wasn't to you.

Sebago was known as USDA 44488 before being named

Chippewa was known as USDA 42672

Katahdin was known as USDA 42667

Katahdin and Chippewa are reciprocal crosses, same parents but turned around as pollen parents.

I noticed when I went to my favorites that the site was unavailable also. It will be up after they do some maintenance.

I'll admit that I am at a loss with all that pedigree info... But I do know that Yukon Gold was developed at a very well known and respected agricultural University here in Ontario - the University of Guelph - east of London Ont., west of Toronto Ont. They do alot of work with plants, and animals. They have THE best veterinary school and hospital there as well - if you want the best care for your ailing pet - no matter what it is (!) - (meaning no matter what species of pet, or nature of disease), this is where you want to go! They also have excellent horticultural on-line courses and degrees!

I'll admit that I am at a loss with all that pedigree info... But I do know that Yukon Gold was developed at a very well known and respected agricultural University here in Ontario - the University of Guelph - east of London Ont., west of Toronto Ont. They do alot of work with plants, and animals.

Kim, what Tom is showing is that lots of breeding work came before there ever was a variety known as Yukon Gold and that the parentage for it goes back to the 1800's.

The University could only build on ALL that occurred before in order to get what they got.

Pedigrees for a variety are fun. Kinda like a human family tree, if you will.
