Default Tomatoes that taste like Black Krim

Anyone have suggestions for tomato varieties that taste similar to black krim?
I dont mean look like black krim, but that have the similar flavor?

Jennifer,

You'll like Paul Robeson. I grew Tula, Krim, Robeson, Spudakee, Cherokee Purple, Indian Stripe and Jd's Special C-tex last year. The best for me were C-tex, Robeson and Spudakee. Both for taste and production. Krim and Tula only gave me 3 or 4 tomatoes each. Robeson was very productive and tasty. Some might say the taste is too mild but I liked it a lot.
I have seeds for Robeson, C-tex, Spudakee and Tula if you are interested.

PR's are such a beautiful tomato, deep orange to black shoulders, with a very deep taste. Perfect balance, smoke/sweet taste. Finally this summer seed i have saved are growing great loaded plant i posted a photo here under photos jenn.

I'm now getting ripe Paul Robeson's and will be picking one today.
I'll slice one up for lunch.
This is one of the tomatoes I have really been wanting to try.

Man, I'm jealous! My PR has maybe 6 fruits on it. I pulled my first ripe one last but didn't get a chance to eat it. Great, now I'm going to be thinking about that tomato sitting on my counter just waiting to be eaten. I may have to go home for lunch today!

Jennifer, ever since I received the variety Noir De Crimee in 1992 from Norbert in France I've wondered if that's the real Black Krim, and not what most grow today.

As I noted in my book the Noir one tasted better to me, was more productive and seemed to have better tolerance to foliage diseases.

I didn't spread the seeds around much b'c I thought most folks would equate this Noir one with Black Krim and say it was a duplicate.

So why not try Noir de Crimee if you want something closest to the Black Krim of today.

As for me, I left the so called black variety fad quite a few years ago, and yes, I do call it a fad, and I also had a very hard time comparing the tastes of those that I had grown. I've posted here at Tville the thread that has the genetic studies done on quite a few black varieties in terms of which gf alles they have, that's green flesh, so maybe you might want to try something that has the same gf alleles that Black Krim has.

But without pulling up that thread, and it's somewhere, yes, everything is somewhere, I don't remember if Black Krim was tested for gf alleles but I would like to think it was.

Finally, I'm not against fads all together b'c Craig and I long ago suggested that the green when ripes would be the next fad, that happened and I'm glad b'c unlike the many blacks, I LOVE the GW Ripes.

Well

I have been growing many tomato plants at home and at school and I brought in several very different types of tomatoes for the kids to try at school. We tasted these the other day in addition to what we grew in the school garden.

I am trying to expose them to all sorts of tomato types and teach them about heirlooms and seed saving. We fermented our first batch of tomato seeds the other day.

So I was quite surprised but a good number of the children actually really liked black krim.
It was about 80 children of 100 children, so about 80 percent liked it.

I want to make sure we grow something like it next year for them to try but I didnt want to be repetitive.

Also - I really like black krim, in addition to the sweet tomatoes I have been craving lately. I like that you can get all sorts of flavors out of the same fruit - sweet, salty, bitter...
I think that is a cool thing to teach, too.

i was not impressed by paul robeson, black from tula, spudakee, jd's special c-tex but cherokee purple is a fantastic tomato. i am growing black krim this season and have the 1st picked on the kitchen table but it'll be a few days before i try it.
