Black irish
My smallest tuber from this one was 15oz and the largest 24oz for a total over 9lbs from one hill. It is a great tasting dark purple/black flesh.

Wow, but sad to say I think that one is too large for me and the very limited space I have. It is very beautiful

Wow. That is something! I was eyeing that one as TPS from the description and now knowing that taste good + 9lb per hill is in my list for next year. Is Negate in the same family?

I am not sure Wendy, I hope Tom chimes in on the subject. I believe it may be from a seperate line than negate, negation, and negima. But again not sure.

Interesting seeing the Black Irish potato variety growing 125 miles away from the ones I have in Skagit County, Washington.
For the record Black Irish is from a 2009 cross of Negro Y Azul and Irish Tom. The seedling was grown out as a first year seedling in 2010. The pedigree includes many varieties such as Red Regis, Lenape, Lumper, Tollocan, Vokal, Black Hills Gold, John Tom Kaighin, Tom Kaighin, Multa, Oberarnbacher Fruhe, A81286-1, Butte, Norgold Russet, Russet Burbank, Delta Gold, Katahdin, etc. There are many more in the ancestor list but these are the ones that roll off my memory. Having grown each of those varieties and tasting each of them gives me a deep appreciation of having them all assembled into a single clone. Negate...BTW...is a cross of Negro Y Azul and Blue Ox. A full sib of Angus Bull. Oh...that reminds me to find a picture of a new clone that I used pollen from Angus Bull the other day to make a cross. The female clone is a freshly name sib of Black Irish which I named Black Famine. Does anyone want to see a picture of it? The picture below is a shot of a single plant of multiple hills of BLACK FAMINE. Tubers of this clone wintered in the row last year and had great late blight and frost resistance. Don't worry about the name...it ain't 1847 anymore. |
