The Winter EarthTainer "Farm" - Jan. 23 - Snow Peas
One "upside" of our ongoing drought has been very warm weather with temps averaging 75 degrees all this month. The Snow Peas are loving it:
I've spread the seeding over several weeks so I should have several more weeks of harvest: To be sure, we will pay the price for this weather later this year with water rationing for sure! Raybo |

Looking great, wish I could put some snow peas and fava in the ground. As for drought, let's hope we get a miracle March.

Hi Damon,
These are Oregon Giant II which are my favorite. Sitting in the backyard just now (75 degrees) and I noticed the cherry tree is in blossom. Hard to believe in late January. I've got a pair of Bloody Butcher plants outside developing - which will go in an EarthTainer close to the house next weekend, just for fun! We will see if this warm weather holds - - although I may not be able to afford the water bill with the rationing. The whole Nation is going to get socked with higher California produce costs later this year, unfortunately. Raybo |

Hi Raybo,
Great looking peas!! I'm amazed that you'll be planting your bloody butcher tomatoes so early. Is this the earliest plant out date you can recall? Due to the drought and way too many tomato plants this year, I'm cutting back on a number of things that are easy to find at the store (even though they might not be as good as homegrown), like peas and some of the peppers. I have managed to allot space for fava beans though and last week, I planted a pack of seeds each of the 3 different types of fava beans offered by Baker Creek. This water situation is certainly worrisome! We're not metered here so no financial impact for us, but I want to do my part and will be conserving as much as possible. Let us know how things go with the bloody butcher! Anne |

Hi Anne,
Yes, I've never started anything outside this early in the past - but with every day hitting 75 and sunny skies, I thought why not take a chance on the Bloody Butcher as an early candidate. Here is a quote out of today's Mercury News: "Already, the 2013-14 rainfall season is shaping up to be the driest in 434 years, based on tree ring data, according to Lynn Ingram, a paleoclimatologist at UC Berkeley." ...Sounds like a good excuse to be taking showers together.... Hi Raybo,
That Merc article is scary!! Sure hope we don't end up with a dust bowl in the valley anytime soon. OT - can I ask you how you post your photos? A number of us have been having problems with the old method (showing thumbnails) and I'm confused by some of the discussion on the problem in the photo section. At this point, I'd just like to insert one or two photos in with the text like you've done - can you easily explain how you do it? Thanks! Anne |

Anne,
I export the photos to my desktop at 600 x 800 dpi, then upload them to my Photobucket account. Then in my Library, highlight the IMG url associated with the specific photo, copying the link. I then paste the IMG link within my text message on Tomatoville. (Do a "preview post" check before posting your message to make sure it shows the actual photo you want.) Raybo |

Hi Raybo,
Thanks for the info. I really dislike the idea of using something like flicker or photobucket - but may end up having to do that..... Anne |
