Default banjam rumi orange

I grew this tomato last year. They are small, orange ribbed tomatoes. However, I can find practically no info about them. Has anyone grown these? The plant was prolific, with bland-tasting, albeit pretty, fruit. I've seen info on tomatoes with similar spelling, but this is what I have. I would like feedback from others who have grown these.

Thanks.

Donna

I think you can find more info on this variety by reversing the words and calling it:

Rumi Banjan

These are thin skinned yellow to orange tomatoes. Very juicy, just over ¼ lb each. They keep well for being so thin skinned.
This is a rare variety coming from Afghanistan and almost went extinct until Tom Kleffman was able to revive it.

My seed envelope says "Banjan Rumi Orange." The description you state is very similar to what I was told. Except mine are very ribbed, and I don't see that mentioned anywhere. Mine look like a little pumpkin. This is why I would like to know what I really have. Is Rumi Banjan ribbed?

This came from secret seed cartel

Originally from Afghanistan. Very very rare. Brought to the U.S. in 1937. These are small, ribbed little tomatoes that are so sweet it's like eating dessert. Juicy and a light taste. They turn bright orange with yellow streaking when ripe. Banjan Rumi is actually the Persian word for tomato, so you may see a red tomato somewhere with the same name. I added the "Orange" at the end to distinguish this from another that is red.
Regular Leaf
Indeterminate

Click on the various names and see what you find.

This variety, with many spellings, has been known for many decades, as donated to the USD GRIN all those years ago.

Tom Klefferman, noted above, I think is still a member here, best known for discovering what he called Terhune but well I remember a thread done at idig several years ago where this/these varieties were discussed in detail, Tom included, and I think most agreed it was not one variety, rather a kind of landrace, if you will.

Please let us NOT discuss landraces again, there are several long threads here already that anyone interested can find with a search at the top of this page.

I've grown Rumi Banjan that I got from WinterSown. The first year I got one plant with red fruit, but others and subsequent plants were yellow/orange and developed the red flush in the blossom end as they got ripe. Tomatoes on the same plant varied from fluted to smooth, with fluted being more common. They were among the earlier to bear, very prolific and quite seedy. To me, the taste was fine, not bland like some yellows. But also not exceptional. I grew them for a few years as an early. Comparing my early toms of 2012:

I did not save any seeds from the red variant, so don't know if they would have continued to throw both colors. I have tons of seeds from the yellows.

I bought the seeds from SSC. My fruit do not look like the pics that ddsack show. And there are no pics in Tatiana's site of rumi banjan, nor does she mention the ribbed fruit. THAT is why I'm asking what I have. I have no idea what landraces is/are, and I'll not mention it. None of my fruit were bicolor. All were orange. My fruit are small, heavily ribbed and orange. So, I assume the seed I have from SSC is NOT rumi banjan - at least not to my eyes. Hence, my questions.....

Donna, I don't have any good pictures of my Rumi's on the vine, but there were more ribbed than not. I believe Tom Kleffman donated seeds to Trudi for WinterSown distribution, so it's very possible I have some of his stock. Tom has a wonderful blog about his garden and family, and has mentioned the Rumi's in his blogs off and on in the last few years. In his blog, he says that the color varies depending on the temperature it ripens at and there are pictures as well - go to http://threedaughtersfarm.com/wp/?p=1573 and scan to the 5th picture down for a group picture of Rumi's and his comments on temperature affecting the color. I think you may very well have the correct tomato since your climate probably tends to be hotter than ours, which would favor the gold color, if his theory is correct.

How large does the plant usually get? My seedling (thanks, Dee!) desperately needs to be potted into the final growing location, and I was hoping it would be happy in a smaller container. Does it get as large as Black krim? or will it stay more compact..

OK, so I officially have "Rumi Banjan" is that what you are saying? I can safely purchase seeds of RB from anyone and get the same seeds that are labeled "Banjan Rumi Orange" that I purchased from SSC? I am hoping to save seeds, but if that fails, I need to know the correct name. I can always purchase again from SSC (so long as they stock them), but just want to know the "correct" name. My fruit are heavily ribbed and pretty. And I had a TON of production. the taste didn't match the description, however from SSC, but that may have something to do with the soil, temps, etc. What threw me was the description (of Banjan Rumi Orange) as SSC stated "I added 'Orange' to the name," so I thot it was something "new."

Thank you for being patient with me.

Donna, if your tomatoes look like the pictures in Tom's blog, then chances are good you have the right variety. Here is a link to the USDA GRIN info and their pictures for Rumi Banjan. http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs...lay.pl?1132801

But I do wonder about the orange color - is it uniform all over the tomato from first ripeness? Mine start out yellow and only get the gold/orange cast later as they ripen and the red flush on the blossom end travels upward. But I realize people have different color perceptions, and as Tom said the temperature affects the ripe color.

Narnia - my plants in the garden were medium height, maybe chest high by the end of the season, but very bushy and branching. Might need a bit of pruning in a pot to keep it in bounds.

I've been trying to think of the other variety that's said to be a landrace b'c it's still heterozygous and gives different shapes and fruit colors from seed. It was in an earlier post here that I said that there was a thread at idig where folks concluded that Banjan Rumi, or however it is
spelled, was also a landrace and Tom K participated in that thread.Rumi

So here it is and it's called Nagcarlang:
