Default Brussels Sprouts

http://www.durgan.org/URL/?KMCBJ 10 April 2014 Repotting Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts plants were purchased and moved to larger pots. This will enable the roots to enlarge and the plants will be strong and healthy when planted in the outdoor garden in about one month. Brussels sprouts thrive in cooler weather and they take a very long season to mature. They grow well in my zone 5.

Durgan I have already pulled up my sprouts for the year. Down here they are definitely only a winter crop.

When do you start seeds, plant and then harvest?

Seeds are started about end of February. Plant as soon as ground can be worked. Brussels sprouts can take much cold and frost. Harvest during the summer as needed, but the main harvest is late Fall and the whole stem is pulled, also the plant can be left even in the snow and used as desired.

Example not my best year.

http://www.durgan.org/URL/?DRUXI 5 November 2011 Brussels Sprouts (Jade Cross)Juicing.
Twelve Brussels Sprouts (Jade Cross)are usually planted each year and often they are not used. This year juice was made out of some. A total weight of six pounds were processed. Some celery and parsley was added for flavour.
Method. Remove from stalk and cull,Place in a suitable pot, cover with water and boil gently until soft, then beat into a mash using a hand blender. Strain through the hand strainer. The residue from the hand strainer was put through my Champion juicer to extract maximum nutrients. The extracted juice was placed in litre jars and Pressure Canned at 12 PSI for 15 minutes for storage at room temperature.
The sprouts were not pristine this year due to my neglect in not watering at the appropriate time. July was droughty and I concentrated on higher priority plants with the watering. I have grown perfect large sprouts in the past. They grow well in my area.

Down here I start my seeds in August in an air conditioned room. They need it fairly cool to sprout. Once I figured out that little trick it was much easier to grow them down here. If I waited til it was cool enough for them to grow outside then it was too late to get any sprouts before the summer heat would arrive the next year.
