Jerusalem Artichokes

Do they grow in the south. Any thoughts?-Rena

Hey Rena,
No personal experience with growing in Georgia, but, I did learn something new today. These are the tubers of a species of Helianthus, or Sunflower. Apparently they grow in all but the coldest areas of the West. I would think that they would grow in your neck of the woods if most other Helianthus grow over there.

Rena,

They grow great for us, although, we are a few hundred miles north of you. We typically plant them in late March. Just remember that once you plant them, you'll ALWAYS have them (ie. you can't get rid of them) .

Rena...You can't get rid of them after harvest either...I just cleaned out an extra fridge in the garage that we use for vaccine, etc. I found a sack in a crisper drawer from the fall 2005 and they were in VERY good condition...

We are in hot country here collo and my dad had a plot of them along the driveway fence. 8 foot tall plants with sunflower like flowers (but much smaller), came up evey year.
I grew up eating roast artichokes with the roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips etc, every sunday.
Two hours later you could fart out the candles on grandmas birthday cake LOL
Add some roast onions to the meal and you could gas a stadium

Rena,
Tahnks for asking. With all that has been going on, I am not sleeping that well actually. I was just beginning to get used to the gear when I got hit by a virus that is causing so much sinus congestion and coughing that the mask had to go away for a couple of weeks now. I am about ready to give it another go. I am also thinking of trying a nose/mouth mask as I was having a little problem with mouth leakage.
