new here
hi everyone ! new here and this is my 4th year at growing tomatoes in 6 gal buckets, the first 2 years weren't bad . last year was bad only thing that turned out were the 2 cherry tomato plants, the others all turned red but were hard as rocks with no flavor. lol seems a lot of people in this area (s.e. wi.) had the same problem, weather I guess. this year I'm going with 8 different kinds to see which will work the best. (they'll probably all do great lol) changed to a different soil variation this year too. here's a list of what I'm trying this year---bella rosa--margarita paste---Oregon---Siousun gold---super sweet 100's---first prize--- and chapman. so i'll see what happens----tom

T...there are many variables when growing tomatoes. Try different things...you learn more that way. Generally, I would recommend trying a couple of larger containers. Also, it is important to have a well-drained planting mix. If you want to go simple....add about 1/3 cactus mix to a quality potting mix. Many weak fertilizations instead of few strong feedings....works better. Just a few keypoints. goodluck

Hi and welcome. A sungold is a huge plant. A 6 gal bucket is way too small. Is the ground unsuitable for growing? or plant it in a bucket that the bottom is cut out of so it can grow down into the ground too. My sungold last year was about 9 ft tall before the tops fell over the sides of the cage.

hi actually it's not a sungold it's a sunsugar. I grew the sungold last year. it got over 6 feet tall in the bucket with no problems. lots of fruit . bad year for the other varieties I tried last year. they turned red but were all hard as rocks with no flavor.
