Purple Russian

Hi All - has anyone grown Purple Russian? It's my first time and they are looking a bit wilty/limp. No bugs, the leaves look nice and green and the blooms like nice and yellow. It gets a tsp of Miracle Gro and 2" of water a week. None of the other tomato plants around it look a little wilty/limp like this.

I grew Purple Russian last year and also noted the wispy foliage...but quit worrying about it when the plant started pumping out the fruit. Great production on this one and it makes a nice salsa!

Agree. The plants are very wispy but are loaded up with ripening fruit. Looking forward to trying these. Have four plants growing now.

I'm growing it for the first time this year as well. The wispy foliage is normal and so far it seems pretty healthy. My only complaint is that the plant is HUGE and has a lot of leaves between clusters, don't know how it will live up to being a big producer (unless I cut down the other plants ahem getting in its way.) Fruit look pretty!

I did not grow Purple Russian but have another pink russian variety that is called Biyskaya Roza with wispy foliage. It has leafs similar to heart varieties and producing nice beefsteaks (got seeds from Tania). Tasty and good production so far.

Yes, wispy, like other similar varieties. Great production though, lovely trusses of tomatoes. BER in my garden. Also, shoulders tended not to ripen and generally had to cut off the top 1/4-1/3 of the tomato, but what was left was very nice indeed.

Thanks so much! This is the FIRST year I've changed up my entire gardening regimen and the FIRST year I haven't had anthracnose/blight problems but when I saw the wispy plants, I went, "oh oh...here we go again..."
