First Brandywine Cowlick's
I am thankful that Camo talked this plant up. My plant is healthy and full of nice/half grown maters. The problem is: I am leaving for 6 days and I felt I had to pick the first fruit. It is huge, 50/50 green and red down the sides (green on shoulders). Will this be over-ripe it when I return? thanks

It should be fine for six days if it is kept inside a cool house but outside if the temps are pretty high it might start rotting in that time especially if there are any breaks in the skin. I usually pick mine at first blush because of frequent rains and bird and squirrel damage if I leave them to ripen too long in the garden. I keep mine on a shaded porch to finish ripening and they usually last at least a week before they need to be eaten or cooked down into sauce but I do pick early in the blush stage.

I'm so jello us.
My brandywine is an unknown strain i got at the local place two years ago. I got about 8 biggie brandy's last year. That flavor. It's like a hot watermelon close to the rind. Definitely tastes different than any other tomato this man has ever tasted. Beautiful plant..those leaves! |

Some have grown several different Brandywines in the same season and said one did better than the others and others have said that a different one did better than the others when they also grew several in the same season. As for me, I'm one who thinks it (they), since I've grown several versions myself, have a unique taste, but then there are a few others that I think have a unique taste as well. Carolyn

Sorry that I misread Carolyn's comment and was trying to make a little joke - oops!

Sorry Linda, but I don't know what you are referring to, I really don't.
Now headed out to the front room to watch some tennis from Wimbledon and will check back later as to what you meant by that comment. Carolyn

Reminds me of the tuna commercial. They don't want tuna with good taste, they want tuna that tastes good!

I think they hold pretty well and 6 days should be no problem in 78 degree indoor temps, not in any sunlight. I enjoy that variety and think it as well as Terhune both set fruit better in hot temps, as compared to Brandywine Suddeth, my personal choice for "best tasting tomato of all." Squirrels and birds agree with me on that as they will take bites from a barely blushing Br Sud vs a nearly fully ripe anything else I'm growing.

Got back from VC...and the mater was good after 6 days on the counter. Thanks for the advice. I do not know about the different "strains" of Brandywine. Perhaps there is something to it. Either way...my BC's is a winner.
