I sent Dean seed of several F3 lines that had been stabilized for expression of anthocyanin accumulation in fruit. I learned that he had shared these with others after the fact.

I don't believe that the anthocyanin lines tend to outcross more readily than others. I've seen several natural crosses happen in my own lines, but given the numbers of plants I grow I don't think it's any higher than with traditional OP types.
I do think many of the early lines made available were unstable, some wildly so. I understand the rush to market, but I believe it did hurt the potential for the anthocyanin types to be appreciated until there are some truly outstanding releases. |
