I mostly water from the bottom up in a RGGS and this work extremely well. I also do some pots set up on drip irrigation which also do well. I like the ease of the RGGS and for me is extremely productive. Either system will work, you just have find which one works best for you.

I only water from the bottom. It keeps the mix moist enough for the wicking to continue, but to me the plastic cover is really important. It keeps most of the rainwater out, which keeps the plants from getting too much water when it rains. I mix in dry fertilizer (Tomato Tone) and dolomite lime when planting, then supplement with liquid fertilizer every week or so.
In theory, rainwater should just drain out of the drain holes. But I have done it with and without plastic and the plants were much healthier with the plastic cover. Also, it keeps my dog from eating the potting mix. |

I'm going to do the same on my sips next year. I'll have to find a good liquid fertilizer. My dogs don't get into my soil mix but I do have to raise my containers so they don't pee in them.
