Default A name by any other

Just going to throw this out there ....

What's in a name and do you really think people love a certain tomato on the namesake alone?

For example: Assuming all parameters (taste, growth, etc...) are the same, would you rather grow a variety called "Psycho Starship Zinger" or a variety named "Red Tomato #37" ???

No way Mortgage Lifter makes it into 'The Hall' without the Radiator Charlie name and story. So yes.

Girl Girl's Weird Thing, now how's that for a name? In the thread on it, some people said the name repelled them, until I explained the story and history.
I would definitely grow psychic starship zinger just for the name, only I would let other people try it first and report on the taste.

Im growing one called "The Thong". Why on earth would you ever name a tomato that? This one has to be one of the worst names ever.

Yuk! I do not think that I would wish to try it based on the name alone.

I don't like any of those.
The first one is weird sounding for a tomato.
The second one sound too ordinary. Most tomatoes are red and what is the significance of #37 ?
But if I had to pick one, based on the name it would be the second one.
I think names have to have some relevance or sound pleasing when it is applied to edibles.

I like the sound of ones that have the name of the place of 'origin' or the person who developed it. Adds a sense of history as well as ethnicity.

The names used were for example only ... the #37 represented a numerical variety (boring right) and yes a lot of tomatoes are red. It could be "Pink Tomato #12". It seems that most people gravitate toward a pleasingly named tomato without too much regard to the taste or productivity. I've tasted some fancy named ones that people rave about and they pretty much tasted like "Green Bangladesh Sewer" <<< LOL .. WORTH. Some of them are pretty gosh darnoodley good, great even - but it seems the fancier or more appealing the name ... the more average or sub-par they actually are. This was the point of the posting.

In a post here either today or yesterday I spoke to that issue when I was describing how I liked to help folks name tomatoes that came to them unnamed and I gave several examples such as Neves Azorean Red, and someo thers.

And I said that when naming ubknown varieties I wanted TRUE backgrounds or not some name that would make it popular or convincing folks to grow it, or something like that.

I think I posted that in the Tentative growout list for 2016 thread when alerting folks tothe fact that it was Neves Azorean, not Azorian, Red that was correct.

Which reminds that I have to find that thread b'c someone apologized for spelling it wrongly and said he was sorry, and he had nor reason to be sorry at all as he'll see when I link to how I found out that the residents of the Azores were called Azoreans.

Carolyn, who really doubts she would grow any of the ones mentioned in the first post, just because, and if she misses a great one I know she can find one equally as great, she thinks.

Yeah with the pictuer and all the hype about Copia and it tasted like a soured wash rag.
It truly is the only tomato I have ever spit out of my mouth.
Silvery Fur tree came close.
