Broke the 3# barrier ...
Grew a Big Zac F1 that weighed 3lbs 8oz. Would have broke the 4# barrier with a huge double fused Mushroom Basket, but one of my relatives decided to pick it and eat it without telling me...
No one is fessing up, which is typical. I was hoping to save seeds out of it. My trail cams didn't catch them, seems one was shut off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Here's a pic of the missing tomato, taken a few weeks ago. Maybe I can put the pic on milk cartons for its safe return... But I fear it's too late.

At least you can look at the loss with humor. My relatives all know to ask before helping themselves. Take MY SEEDS? I think not.

Nice! I grew some Big Zac F2s this year also which were almost as big and the plants were loaded. I'll be growing F1,F2 and F3 next year and see what they turn out like.

That's awesome. I finally broke the 1# barrier this spring.
How many of the 3 pounder are on the plant at the same time? I count 4 just from your picture. |

How is the flavor of Big Zac? I used to grow Omars Lebanese because they would always give me a couple of bragging tomatoes but the flavor and texture was not worth the trouble. I like growing big fruited varieties because with my long season tomatoes get progressively smaller as the season goes on and if I start with a medium tomato by this time of the year I am getting large cherries off those plants. I don't specifically grow for size but rather for flavor and productivity; but I don't mind having a few in excess of 2 lbs every year.

I do hope that it works... and I bet that whoever harvested the missing tomato enjoyed it immensely. I wonder if they actually ate it or used it for show and tell?
That happened to me one year too. I had only one tomato on my Delicious plant to grow large and gave my neighbors permission to pick a few tomatoes out of my garden. I forgot to mention not to pick the big one......

Baskets the big one was the missing 4 pounder. There were 8 or 9 other tomatoes on the plant Ranging from 1 1/2 to almost 3 pounds, quite the tomato Machine, taste is pretty good also. I just let the plants grow, no single stem, no pinching of suckers I did trim the bottom leaves away from the soil. |

Seed from TGS. I cut up the 3# 8 oz tomato last night, got lots of seeds and ran it through a juicer, today the purée will be cooked Down for spaghetti sauce. Big Zacs produce a lot of purée, I'll let you know how the sauce comes out for taste. I don't have many F1 seeds left, but I would be glad to send you some F2 seeds out of the 3 1/2 Pounder and some F3 seed I saved out of some 2 pounders. Let me know. I'm in debt to you anyway, your bleach spray has saved numerous plants Of mine the past couple years! |
