I will ALWAYS wear gloves when working in soil, weeding etc. I am not a nutcase about bacteria but there is plenty of it in soil and I do not want to bring it into my kitchen under my nails.

I cook most of our food from scratch and I hate to see dirty looking hands (even if they are just stained) preparing food.

If bacteria in soil was not an issue then why do we worry about washing our garden vegetables, particularly root crops?

It seems like every other day there is a news report of vegetables being contaminated by bacteria and recalled. Is it likely that bacteria is only in the soil growing store bought vegetables? I think not.

I don't think that gloves are going to protect me from every problem but they do protect me from a lot of cuts and scrapes as well as keeping a lot of dirt out of my kitchen.
