If I lived down south, I'd be willing to try it. Direct sowing things like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants up in my part of the country would never work, unless you were happy with picking your first fruits just a couple of weeks before first frost...

I typically get my first fruit in mid-July, and if my plants stay healthy, the harvest continues into at least late-September. It's a short enough season as it is. Direct sowing would just make it shorter.
