Default Anyone start in coldframes?

The low temps are predicted at 50s all week, seems just about the time to try starting seeds outside. We have radishes, spinach, mache, and lettuce growing all quite well right now, Ive taken the windows off for this week to get some rain. Im considering taking the haybales from the second cold-frame bed, lining the bottom with some cardboard, and making a mini-frame for seedlings. I only have one light inside, and Ive got the planting urge!

Does anyone else start in unheated greenhouses or cold-frames?

There's a Growing Under Glass forum -- they're talking about greenhouses and coldframes over there.

Garnetmouth,

I used to do what you're doin' ... build a box from straw bales and top it with old glass window frames.

I shoveled in a bunch of horse manure and covered it with a layer of straw and then a sheet of cardboard. That seemed to keep the frame warmer.

I ought to do that again now that I'm raising too many seedlings to keep under lights in my garage. It's getting to be a clusterfark out there. And if I don't get that danged bar built for the screen porch, there'll be very little tomato growin' next year, boss tells me.
