Farmers Market Insurance
I am looking for insurance options. I want to sell at the local farmers market but insurance options are limiited. NC State Farm Bureau Insurance says they will not insure if all your insurance is not with them. Nationwide will not insure if you have not had insurance with someone else first.
I am starting to look at online options like http://www.campbellriskmanagement.co...rket-insurance If you have insurance, what company do you use? What is your policy type and price? |

I think all of my family's insurance is through Country Companies. We have a farm policy, which covers the liability for all food produced, regardless of where we sell it. That may be a type of homeowner's policy; I'm not sure. I think that would be an important detail to inquire about, if your market policy only covers sales that occur at the market.

insurance for what exactly?
does it cover if someone trips over your booth or a cord? someone "claims" they got poisoned? hot pepper did permanent psychological damage? Man, you just can't hardly do business with the general public anymore. My neighbor slipped and fell in a Wal-Mart and it is their fault? got a lawyer and sued. She is on so much prescription dope, I'm amazed that she can even walk. 90% of the lawyers are in the usa and I think 1 in 4 people in d.c. are lawyers. do we need that many lawyers......... I think not. |

You really need to have liability insurance anytime you deal with the public. It's sad but someone always wants to sue about something.
The attached link shows Farmer's Market insurance for $275/yr. but add that to the cost of the market space and that's a lot of tomato's to sell before even earning a penny. |

we are covered at our one market via the umbrella policy of our " sponser" organization. I also carry on my homeowners for selling and it was pretty cheap.. I worry as I really don't know exactly what they would cover if I needed it.

Same here, umbrella coverage. If your serious about selling file paperwork for a LLC then you are protected.

Just to clarify what Van said, you are more protected with a valid LLC, yes, but you still have to carry adequate insurance.
