Default Changeover Time Begins

It's the first change over time. Yesterday we did the last picking from Pea Bed #1 planted with Wando, pulled out all that mess and dismantled the pea fence. And what a mess it was. First the vines got a lot taller than they usually do and flopped over the fence when a passing storm's wind got hold of them. And the powdery mildew had just taken over. All told, Pea Bed #1 produced 5 lb 4 oz of shelled peas. It's time to plant some Lady Finger cow peas in there.

Then Pea Bed #2 (also Wando) got its first picking and yielded 1 1/2 lbs of shelled peas on the first picking. They were just small flat pods a couple of days ago! It seems that they want to finish all at once now that it's getting hot. We usually plant both beds at the same time but bed #2 was planted 26 days later than bed #1 because its soil was too wet.

The Daffodil zinnias are starting to bloom ahead of the red Will Rogers zinnias which are planted alternately in that row. Behind them is the garlic. On the trellis are Cherokee Trail Of Tears. Yeah, beans and garlic don't play well together but the Russian Inferno garlic on the right half of the row is about ready to exit the bed. The Siberian in the left half needs more time.

I had to add the extenders to the hoops over one of the bean beds as the plants are big enough that they were pushing up against the netting of a low tunnel. Now they have more room. That's Contender on the left, Golden Rod on the right. The adjacent bed has peppers down the middle and carrots down both sides.

I was going to get some flowers planted out in the former potato bed today but with on and off rain that project will wait.
