Advantage to commercial growers? The mechanical tomato picking machinery used today would have a difficult time scooping the fruit up off the ground. After years of hybridizing commercial tomato varieties to exhibit short plant growth so that the machinery fits between the ground and the tops of a short plant and strip all the fruit, now they would have to develop a new picker.
I can hear it now,"No way I am giving up my hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment just to buy new stuff to pick tomatoes off the dirt."

I was interested in the idea that it has been known since the 50's...and apparently kept quiet.
Then the tolerance to moisture stress, different flavor profiles, etc Sent from my motorola edge (2022) using Tapatalk

I am interested if anyone knows which mutation it is and under what name or label it is kept. For me, who for health reasons have to limit the number of tomatoes I grow, growing such rare tomatoes (including those with white variegation) would be an interesting program for the future.
