Brand of Tweezers?
I am trying to make a Sungold F1 X Cherokee purple cross. This is my first atempt at crossing, and have had a little trouble emasculating the small sungold flowers. The tweezers I am using are useless(can't grab ahold of the petals or anther cone). Can anyone suggest a brand of tweezers that are good for emasculation. I have been able to remove the anther cone with just a razor blade but I am not sure if I damaged the ovary or not. Also is it a problem if the corolla is completely removed. Thanks alot.

eBay has lots of different kinds of tweezers. I am sure you can find some that are suited for your purpose.
I got a pair thats needle-sharp which I use to pick splinters out from my fingers. dcarch

I've included the above link to view some good examples of tweezers similar to what I use. My favorite pair is like the one in the bottom of the picture, but where I bent the points to one side making more of a hooking action. I direct the hook direction away from the style, thereby missing it when I pull and shove the anther cone off the flower base. In any event, I try to have a variety of tweezers available depending on the type of anther cone which is related to whatever variety you are emasculating. Comfort through success, making failures less and less likely as the years, (yes, years) go by. Cussing is a natural coinsurance to maintaining sanity while making crosses. Tom Wagner |
