German Johnson-Benton
Very large productive delicious fruit, one of Camochef's favorites. He wont distribute seeds anymore, BUT I WILL! I would grow this one again in a heartbeat. Taste 9/10 productivity 12/10!!!! Balanced sweet & acid, but assertive, it has that pow when you bite into it.
I bought my seeds from Dana directly. |

The exterior of the GJ-B tomato is beautiful. Sounds like a total winner with the 9/10 taste and 12/10 productivity. Can't imagine what it would be like in a good or even normal year.

I have always loved German Johnson (very dependable) but haven't grown it for a few years due to so many other varieties I wanted to try. Is the German Johnson-Benton something different or an improvement to the regular German Johnson?

This is a link to the garden center that has been selling plants of German Johnson
(Benton). http://www.danasgardenplace.com/ Just a very brief history. |

Thanks Greyghost. Since I live in northeastern Pa I could try to get there for a plant if she offers it again. Just wonder how this compares to my seeds of German Johnson!

I always grow German Johnson (potato leaf) tomatoes every season. One of my top 10 favorites. Kind of stingy on production at times but well worth the wait. I'm having some tonight for dinner along with some corn beef hash and some fried eggs...I LOVE sliced tomatoes with eggs!!

Berkeley Tie Dye Heart
RL wispy foliage so far this plant has given me 12 fruit, all about this size. Plant height about 6'. Taste is very excellent, very similar to Pink BTD. If I have a complaint, it is that it has a slightly thick skin, but that might just be why the fruit are maturing instead of cracking and rotting with all the rain. Taste 9/10 just plain delicious.
Isn't it pretty? |

Camo, aka Mike, was very devoted to Dana and what she offered and had said that the Benton one was the best of the GJ ones, but not everyone agreed with him that it was that different from other German Johnson ones, whether RL or PL. And so it goes, and not all that different from Mike saying that Cowlick's Brandywine which he bought as Brandywine and named it for the nursery, which was called Cowlicks Nursery, was the best Brandywine.. Carolyn, who notes that Mike had very strong opinions about lots of varieties. I've known him for many many years. He used to post at idig with long posts about different varieties and how they tasted with different kinds of salts and other seasonings. And if he didn't get enough responses he'd just leave. And back the same for the next year. When he discovered that idig was once again OK he came back to idig this year where he started two threads, one for reds and one for pinks. Not many responses so he left.Yes, I was there and still am as a Global Mod after Mischka bought idig off of e-bay, and good thing he did.
