I just woke up and see it's a Cat 4 by 1 mph and should be dropping soon. I flipped through channels and the winds in Miami don't look too bad except the drama from the weather channel with Mike Siedel doing the famous Jim Cantorie stance between buildings. I hope social media blows them up for letting him act like a fool.

Now we know why American alligators evolved the way they did.
When a Hurricane comes they clamp onto something with their mouths and let their skinny bodies flap in the wind.

I wouldn't be on a boat right now even up here in the lesser winds Broward County is getting. So far power still on, our street is not flooded at all, mailbox is down though, and a very very strong gust just moved through.
I wouldn't get on a boat on even a normal windy day. I get seasick.

A boat is very handy after the storm passes but no way would I
be in one now.

"...All our jerky will be gone before Irma gets here."

I miss Dave Barry, lol. Need to seek him out more often. Hilarious
and serious in a small package. A rare talent.

On a serious note, I've never been comfortable with the 'fingers
crossed' method of hope. Having been in so many un-known
situations. Storm Igor taught us so much about the un-known.

The power goes out and the sounds of everyday life are gone,
replaced by the sounds of horrific wind and rain.

Talked to my sister many hours the past couple days and now on
a play-by-play texting from the shelter as it seems 'text only' right now.
In lock-down and in the dark. One generator seems
working to keep the cafeteria going. Storm solid picture window
at the end of their hallway...someones water heater just rolled
pass, and seems five hours before it really hits full on...

It looks like it's gonna weaken when it pulls in this dry air.

We just heard from my cousin in Fort Myers. She is hunkered down in her home, alone with four cats. Her own and neighbours' pets who evacuated. Her home is only 12 years old and built to the higher standard of the day, and it is 13 feet above sea level and a bit inland, but still the risk of flooding may be the worst. The hospital where she works is within walking (or wading?!) distance, but she said it is an old building and is only designed for Cat 3.
Scary times.

Glad our relatives in Naples decided to evacuate a couple of days ago. They did so when the path still had it hitting the eastern side of Florida and were initially planning to stay put...

About 30-35(guessing) miles away, and much more coastal.

Interesting story I heard on TV several years ago.
There was a home builder that used the metal clips and brackets on homes he built in Florida.
His homes were more costly because of it and he didn't get very many bids.
I cant remember what hurricane came through but all of the homes that didn't have these clips ine this area were blown away.
His were the only ones standing.
He then got tons of businesses and me thinks this is the new standard for all homes now.

That's not the standard everywhere along the coast. After Katrina I had to use more clips and straps and everyone complained but it does help. It's kinda odd that Gulfport only used some of Miami-Dade upgrade regulations. I built my house and used clips and straps so much the inspectors were questioning me.

Marsha, do you still have power? It looks like it's out on some of the Weather underground weather stations. I see some light winds when you can find it on here.
Type in Miami and you can see the working personal weather stations.

It's up and going again, Salt. At least for the time being.

I noticed that this resort has already been closed for annual renovations. They just might have more renovating than they were expecting.

They couldn't have planned that any better if they tried.

The eye looks like it's wobbling bad and unorganized.

And she looks like she's smiling at all the hyperbole she created.
