I have not had any problem with Brandywine's wilting. But, if they were hardened they might, and also perhaps the soil wasn't warm enough yet here.

My tomatoes have been in the soil since May the 2nd. I looked at the weather forecast and it seemed like the lowest we'll have for the next couple of weeks will be in the high 40s. That's good enough for me.
So far my tomato plants have been thriving, even the Brandywine that seemed to have completely recovered. I have a couple of dozen more tomato plants I will take to my community garden where I rented a plot of 19' by 16'. That should give me enough room for a lot of tomato plants.

Is it necessary harden the seedlings? I have had them on my windowsill facing south and getting exposed to the sun all day long for the last couple of months.
Are they hardened enough this way or should I take them outside first?

If they are indoors behind a glass window they probably have not been getting the suns full uv power. Most windows in homes have a layer of uv protection so if i were you i would still harden them off.

Now that my tomatoes are doing well thanks to Tomatovillians' advice, here's a photo of them (and my runner beans, borage, zinnias, etc.) in my overstuffed cold frame:

Just make sure the growing tip doesnt burn, the existing leaves may get burnt some, but all the new growth from the time you set them out will be UV-ready. In a month those few lower leaves will have been long since forgotton and either fallen off or removed anyway.
