Thanks Karen, definitely a great year inspite of the weather. Most plants not to badly upset by the heat, Clackmas Blueberry is the one plant that seems to have been most affected, large flower trusses with out a fruit

Had a break from bottling nectarines peaches and tomatoes today, went picking instead. Cucumbers, loads of capsicums and some zucchini, plus a few tomatoes. Smaller pots contain individual varieties of Cherry tomatoes, with the largest 12 inch pot being full of Yellow Striped Roman. Once again on deck so boards about 3 inches wide

Low Acid Yellow
I think that I have mentioned this one before, and I took the opportunity to photograph one of the two plants of this variety I have growing before picking the fruit today. I first grew this one as a commercially grown seedling with round yellow slicer fruit of about 5 ounces. From seed saved from this, I now have two dwarf plants about 2 foot 8 inches high currently that have been loaded with fruit upto 8 ounces, normally round, but may have compound blossoms. The plant.

They did not like the extreme heat, but the days of around 90 F they did not object too. The capsicums loved the heat as long as I kept the water up to them, the Zucchinis didn't set very well in the worst of the heat, but have been setting like mad since it cooled off a bit. There is only 4 or 5 days growth difference in-between the large and small ones.

Golden King of Siberia
I have read the thread on this variety name and have just had the first fruit ripen and are yet to determine which variety it actually is.

A lot of work it has been, but also a very informative season and a great learning experience in its own right

Mcsee and his wife dropped in again today during their travels on other business. They were surprised at the condition the plants here considering that they have pulled out all of their own. Both of us are in agreement as too why mine have survived, and that's the difference in available air flow on my paddock vs their house block. They left with half a box of Dunn's Seedling cooking apples and some tomatoes and zucchini.

Kang Kong
The Kang Kong has been growing well and flowering for three weeks or there abouts and I noticed what appears to be seed pods on at least two of the plants. Looking forward to seeing what becomes of this while we are in Tasmania.

Return home
Arrived home yesterday after our Tasmania trip to find the garden a bit blown about with a few dead tomato plants, several on their last legs and a surprising number looking Ok. Butternut pumpkins are looking better than expected and the Kang Kong looking really good with lots of seed pods forming. Will get one of the mini greenhouse's out and cover to extend the harvest season and hopefully allow me to collect the seed.
Couple of shots of main bed with butternuts in foreground and tomatoes behind, butternut and potential hybrid - all seed planted at here and parents came from the one commercial fruit and we both have these round fruit, and a couple of shots of the Kang Kong, bed overview and sedef capsule |
