Two of my babies- Terhune (PL) and DLH (RL). Of 16 DLH I sowed 9 days ago, this one just popped up in 2-3 days along with the Terhunes. Extremely vigorous growth! These are most definitely going to be center stage in my little tomato patch, with plenty of fresh rabbit poo!!

185?!?
500?!?

Usually people say "wow, this is an impressive list!", but in your case it would definitely be an understatement!

Your tomato patch must be the size of a football field...at least! Well, lucky you!

How many plants per variety are you growing?

We'll be waiting for your report at the end of the season. I'm sure it'll be quite impressive

Soon we plan to build a greenhouse! That is when I will really be able to do some serious tomato gorwing. However, this season I will be sowing just 2 seeds of each variety into my 72 cell flats. It works out to only 7 trays of plants, which can be covered by 4x 4foot, 2 bulb t8 lamps until the weather is suitable for hardening off outside. As far as the logistics of staking and trellising goes, I am in the process of building a very nice fence around my garden, which has been a dream of mine for some time now (the wildlife is abundant in and around my garden plot.) The fence will serve the dual purpose of keeping wildlife out of the garden as well as providing excellent support for the tomato vines. This season is somewhat of a trial... sowing only 2 seeds of each variety, I can expect to lose a few varieties, but future seasons will provide more opportunities. Its kind of fun to see a shootout like this... may the most fit genetics demonstrate themselves.

Darin, if one of the six, of the 16 seeds from Dutch you planted that came up is Potatoleaf, that seed is almost certainly either crossed or mixed up. If you have any of your own original seed left, I would plant some.

Impressive...
How you would be able to keep a track of your varieties?

Thank you. I already started a germination test on my end. Sowed 6 via moist paper towel inside a zip lock baggie. If they are good, I'll send you some more.

Karen- I just planted 3 additional seeds from my original tomato find. I think I will grow out this PL variant just for curiosity. Is it possible it's just a recessive trait that is presenting itself? I'm no Gregor Mendel, so forgive my freshman questions

What is your germination test? Perhaps I can get some others started. Thanks!

Darin
I take 1/2 a paper towel oriented with long part vertical, then 6 or so seeds put onto the middle of the bottom 1/6. Then fold the top down onto the bottom. Then drip enough water onto the toweling just to moisten the seeds. At the top of this folded area write the variety and date started. Then turn it over, and fold the lengthwise edges so they meet halfway across the small dampened area. Moisten a bit more so the toweling is mostly damp, then slide into a ziplock baggie and close. Keep at at least 72 F degrees, up to 95F, and check after 3 days. If good seeds you will see the root tip (radical) starting to form.

I am not KarenO but yes if a parent was PL, then your F2 should show about 25% PL, and F3 even more.

Marsha, this is supposedly his stable regular leaf DLH. Seeds sent to him from Dutch.

Darin, a stable RL plant doesn't produce a PL. I would grow it out and the others to see what you get but what you won't be getting at least from that one is your DLH.

I agree with you, if it is a stable RL, then the RL trait is fixed, and a PL showing up would be due to a cross. I was assuming the scenario was a not yet stabilized one.
