Craig I for one appreciate your video postings on your processes for growing. Thank You.
And thank you for the thoughts about the second starting of seedlings. Sometimes here a farmer will grow something for market or for their livestock early and then start the garden on the land after early harvest (or vise versa) |

Craig,
Once your seedlings are potted up and in the driveway, how do you protect them from critters that think it's one big salad bar? |

Hey Whistler - amazingly, we've never had a critter attack in the driveway! I think it is because we have cats around and dogs nearby (which takes care of rabbits and squirrels), and with the pots and rows so close, deer don't like to get their feet into something that is confining (like the little pots). Such small plants are also not very attractive to deer - they seem to need some better bulk until they get interested. sometimes a curious bird pecks at a couple, and occasionally frogs or skinks will take up residence in a few of them.
Fingers crossed, always!

Hi Craig,
Do you have a current photo of your potted up seedlings? I potted up a bunch of stuff (peppers, eggplants, etc., but no tomatoes yet) into Pro Mix 2 weeks ago, and it was super easy to transplant into. I amazed family members with the thumb pressing technique, too. Why do you not fertilize / feed the plants until they go into the ground, though? Just wondering and trying to learn... |

Nothing really happening yet, Craig - right now the seedlings are in their 4 inch pots and we are half way through our seedling sales. I will probably shoot the next vid when I start planting my large pots with indeterminates and dwarfs - perhaps during the next week (no room at the inn yet - got to clear the driveway to allow for them!)

Planting
Are you using tap water or distilled water, when do you use the blue water - fertilizer. Do you grow tomatoes in large pots or do you put in the ground . I live in Maryland , when can I start to grow my tomatoe seeds. Thanks for the videos , very informative.

Today I finally had the opportunity to check out this thread. Was never able to with webtv. Took forever to try loading the thread and would never complete before I got impatient with it. Interesting you can start that many in each cell. I generally put 3-5 per cell and thought I was overdoing it until I finally viewed this thread. Also, for the most part I transplanted the seedlings when very young worried they crowd each other too much. With some I let them grow together and separated at transplant stage in the garden, and they seemed to do well.
Will have to check out the youtube videos if I'm ever able to download IE8. I doubt they'll work with IE6 because I wasn't able to watch videos on youtube last week with this computer. Jeff |

Wow, loved the videos- and it helped to be able to see as you chatted about what you did. Thanks so much!!!
How did the beets do with being transplanted? I had always been told that you couldn't transplant them, but if it works, what a great idea! Do you plant the eggplant as deeply as the tomato seedlings at the first transplant? |
