Yesterday morning I made a construction (such a trapeze) over Czech tomatoes (and their relatives). To each tomato I started the spiral, I pulled all the suckrs and directed the main stem into a spiral. I have the following varieties there:
Stupice, Stupice greenhouse, Tamina, Matina, Mikado, Toro F1, Start F1, Torino F1, Uragán F1, Tornádo F1, Sonet F1, Gallant F1, Orkado F1 and Bejbino F1. I want to compare their earliness and flavor. Vadimír . Unfortunately, wire spirals are not very visible on the photo |

One of the goals I've set is to compare tomato Tamina with Matina. So far, I do not see any bigger differences.

I recall you mentioning last year that Tamina is an anagram of Matina, and that you felt they might be the same tomato. It will be interesting to hear your final thoughts.

Vladimir, my earliest ripe were from Stupicke Moravo, I have picked two fruit - one from a pot, the other from a plant in the ground. The pot beat the ground by about two days. Now I have blushing on Stupicke Sempra on both plants a few days later. Still no color on my own saved US Stupice variety. Although it was seeded 10 days later, the plant size and appearance is very similar. So the Czechs are first!! Thank you for sharing the seeds with me! I don't think I have ever had ripe tomatoes by the end of June before.

Hi Vladimir,
Your Stupické look really good, and of course, I am jealous since mine typically ripen no earlier than the last week in July. For now I'll provide some thoughts, and hope to get some pictures up through the weekend. My CZ Stupické - Moravo, Semo, Sempra, Seva - are all quite consistent, with the Seva plants (Tatiana seed, originating from you) having a bit bigger fruit in both of my growing locations. Interestinging, my "North American" Stupice in both locations are only at the flowering stage, so they are behind their CZ equivalents, seemigly similar to what ddsack has just reported. On the hybrid front, the CZ varieties are doing very well. The Start S F1 and Toro F1 plants are about 6 inches taller than my American hybrids, and have more flowering brachs. An interesting way to report the plants' progress right now is to identify the active flowering/fruiting brachs they have. I'll include that below. Last edited by RJGlew; July 7, 2017 at 04:46 PM. |

The weather was exceptionally warm and dry in June and July. Tomatoes began to mature very early, but they are smaller than usual and some have a yellow collar.
Yesterday I did a little taste test. I was proving the taste of tomatoes Matin, Tamina and Matina Casey's (pictured from the left). I did not find any difference in taste. I also had the taste of Stupické polní rané from various seed suppliers (from SEMO, Moravoseed, SEVA SEED, SEMPRA). I also find no difference. Vladimír |

Over the course of the week, I did another taste test. With the exception of Start F1, all Czech hybrids have a similar taste less than the level of OP tomatoes. They are beautiful, all red spherical tomatoes with a stiff peel. Only the taste is not so superior. Harvested tomatoes are still stiff, can not tell when they are fully ripe (they probably lack a gene as in the supermarket tomatoes).
These are probably tomatoes for businessmen delivering tomatoes to shops, adapted to outdoor cultivation in the Czech Republic with a high yield. In my opinion, these tomatoes are not suitable for home gardening. I have a lot of tomatoes now, and I do not know what to do with them, I'll try to dry them. I have to admit that growing all these hybrids was a mistake. |

I freeze my extra tomatoes because it's easiest to do when you're busy - just put into a ziploc bag and into the freezer. And making sauce is another way, I don't have a canner so I freeze the sauce as well which is easy and doesn't take much space. My favorite sauce and easiest to do is to toss the cut up tomatoes with a bit of oil, garlic, salt, pepper and herbs, then spread them out in a baking dish, roast at 400 F for at least half an hour. Then I turn the oven off and let them continue to dry a bit in the oven overnight. Roasting really brings out the best, even in a plain red tomato. |
