Rouge D' Alger Cardoon. I have two plants, and this one has a five foot spread, from leaf to leaf. I started my seeds in pots three months before our last spring frost date. I exposed the young seedlings to the cool temperatures for a few weeks to "vernalize", even though I know Cardoon does not need this step to produce the flowers. The leaves are absolutely beautiful, and the stalks are pretty and have spines.. Not sure if my season is long enough to get any flowers this year, as we already had a light frost. I might cut the stalk back, and cover and protect over the winter to see if it comes back the following spring. I have a small one in a pot I will keep in my GH for the winter.

The spiny, but beautiful stalks of Rouge D' Alger Cardoon. Notice the stalk is blushed in pale red at the bottom. I know the stalk is edible, but unsure about how to cook and eat it. I love it for it's ornamental value it adds to my garden.

I left most of the IWK runner beans to dry on the vines so I could expand my collection of beans/seeds. I collected almost a whole quart of dried beans.

NewWestGardener, If you grow RDA, I hope you can get your Cardoons to flower. It takes a long growing season, and we had a number of hard frosts over the past couple weeks which took out all the garden except some celery and the cardoon. I was hoping to get them to flower this season. I am thinking I might cut one back, dig up the roots and wrap them up and store them for the winter, then replant in the spring.

Ella, yes, the beans would look great as a framed photo. The colors are so pretty.

Nancy, if you had not pointed out my reflection I would not have noticed..

I wondered why the top of my head looked so big in the reflection, then I remembered it was cold and windy outside that day, and I had my big warm hat and jacket on..
