Ilex, you know I know very few of them but here's my questions.
Do you do all of this by yourself? How many plants of each do you put out for each variety? I think you told me once but others might want to know how you treat your saved seeds. And don't forget I told you when you find that de Colgar multifora HEART one I offered to fly you from Spain to bring seeds, butI didn'tsay anything at all about paying for a flight back to Spain. Carolyn, who can be very forgetful at times, especially when it's to her advantage.

Yes, all by myself with a regular job (part time) and a small kid.
I plant between 5-8 and 40 each, unless I get only 2-3 seeds. Last week I planted all that was left of a variety ... 4 seeds. Fingers crossed, I would hate to see it go extinct. I can catch most crossed up seed, as most people save seed from a single tomato. Some even plant a single saved tomato (easy seed saving). If the variety is diverse, which usually means it comes directly from the source I plant more. If it's a landrace I will also plant more. Seeds planted in rock wool, then into trays, then into the ground. Between rows of tomatoes I plant something else that's tall. |

My major hope for you is that your small kid becomes a larger kid, which will eventually happen, and then he or she can help you do all you do as regards your gardening, which is not all about tomatoes as I remember. Carolyn

Here is my list for 2016. Some were chosen this year because of the need for fresh seed. Others were bought for this year. The only ones I have grown before are Cowlick's, Goose Creek, and Siletz. About half the peppers are new too. They were all started last Sunday and some are coming up already. I am going to start one more tomato but will start a new thread for that.
Tomatoes Brandywine, Cowlick's Goose Creek Abraham Lincoln Mark Twain Mortgage Lifter, Estler's Betimes Macbeth(Pot) Yellow Cherry (Pot) (no name given in trade. Suppose to be a dwarf) Minibel (Pot) Moneymaker Sunset's Red Horizon Marianna's Peace Summer Cider German Johnson Reisetomate The Dutchman Missouri Pink Love Apple Speckled Roman Cherokee Purple Boxcar Willie Jagodka Bloody Butcher Tom's Landrace Paste Mix (a 20 year landrace from a friend on another forum) Bull's Heart Kellogg's Breakfast Amish Paste Siletz Sungold F2 Silvery Fir Tree Pruden's Purple Peppers Sweets Syrian Three Sided Pepper Aji Dulce Corbin di Toro Giallo King of the North Jimmy Nardello Marconi Red Chile Ancho Grande Beaver Dam Georgia Flame Jalapeño Early Santa Fe Grande Jalapeño Cross (a cross that popped up last year. It was from traded seed. It is a jalapeño crossed with I think Hot Banana. It's a a nice lime green > red 1-4"pepper with the same heat and thickness as a jalapeño.)

With this list you'll be swimming in great ones. A suggestion, skip the Japanese BT (small and not so memorable, I kept one alive for two years and tried them throughout the year) and double down on the P Robeson. Best of luck!

so to all of you more experienced growers, I appreciate any input. I have a limited number of each seed and anything smaller than saladette (sp?) I will be growing in 5 gal containers. Also, I may try growing 1 or 2 test varieties indoors from seed at the same time I do an outdoor crop just to check for variation (1000w hps)
So with room for 10 containers (maybe 15 and 40 plants in raised beds I would love your recommendations from my list. |

This is my revised list. Still waiting on some seed deliveries. I need to get going, by next week. Picking up supplies, tomorrow. All of my tomato plants will be planted in straw bales, this year. They were prepared without chemical fertilizers. It takes a LOT longer but is worth it, to me.

Japanese Black Trifele (taste good, great in souse, but smaller size as mentioned before) Cherokee Purple (staple in many garden, worth growing for the taste comparison) Big Rainbow (love the taste but production can be spotty) Delicious (depends on the year, taste and production) Black Krim (some years excellent, rainy years are not) Isis Candy (prone to deceases, tried twice) Sungold (there are better cherry types, Carbon Copy is better complex taste) MOYA (never grew but read it was good one) Black and Brown Boar (never grew but read it was good one) Pink Berkley tie dye (never grew but read it was good one)

One last-minute change from post 203 (page 14). I've found seeds for the Norwegian variety Norderås Busk (bush), and will be growing it instead of Yamal. They say it has a dtm of 50 days.
