Cool Gardeneer. Do you have plans to cover if you get a snap, or just let the chips fall? I know you got plenty of backups.lol. Jimbo

Thanks Jimbo.
Yes I do have plan to protect them. I have so far planted 12. The first 4 were planted out on Feb 23 . I have protected them 4 night so far.
Forecast calls for a low of 33 this coming Sunday night (3-12). Then everything looks fine until March 20th. When that is behind us, I will plant out some more, depending on the 15 days forecast. I will still have my second batch. But they won't be ready until mid April. By then we should be out of the woods. Our average LFD is April 10th.

O Bro , Lindalana
That is some grow list. I have not read/heard the names of most of them.

I, myself, grow mostly know and popular varieties that have been reviewed by members here and elsewhere.

Anyway, good luck and have a great season.

Recommendations can be wrong if you happen to have a mild spring and you know how to protect your plants, so I wish you good luck and hope you really make history!
Looking at your picture I noticed that you used pine needles as mulch (I remember you used them also to improve your soil). Your soil looks a lot different from mine: it’s greyer and looks more sandy. I’ve never mulched my clay soil but I’m planning on doing it this year to prevent water stress and cracking when it gets really hot.
Hay is hard to find for me and I have limited access to manure. I’m not sure if I want to use plastic cloth or if nonwoven fabric mulch cloth would be effective. Pine needles would be easy to find. I’m just wondering if there could be any risk from using them. I know it would make my soil more acidic but I’m more concerned about diseases and funguses. What is your experience?

Gardeneer, thanks!
You are wise in sticking with fewer but true and tried. Chasing after each new "shiny" variety can get one in trouble LOL, I feel almost stressed by my backlog of seeds to try.../ not that I do not want more LOL
Thankfully most of my seeds are from Tatianatomatobase so have good references readymade as well as others from T'ville members.
The big problem I see that every year brings new list of favorites and they are like old friends- you want them to come back.... I have not grown MOPLA, Anna Russian or Marianne peace in several years...

Hey Gardeneer and Vader- the forecast for this weekend is calling for right at freezing for Sunday night. I was thinking of tilling up the soil this weekend, getting the peat moss and rabbit poo all mixed up in that, and letting the freeze kill a few bugs before planting. Do you think next week is safe? I haven't seen an extended forecast.

Thanks!

Darin

Same here , Darin. (35F Sat., 30F Sunday night).
Past Sunday , our next lows will be 37 (following Tues/Wedn). 37F is ok, if the forecast is accurate. But to be safe I will cover them overnight. Then shall resume planting more by the following Thursday/ Friday.

We get the same cold air coming from the North/Northeast. My cole crops are loving it.
PS: Our Ag office recommends planting out tomatoes from April 10th onward.

Well, rock on! I have about 6 "seedlings" that are now a foot tall and looking to go vertical. I really need to get them in the ground! I suppose I could cover them with buckets and such for one night...but we could have tomatoes by early June!!

My first batch of seedlings are about the same size , tho healthy looking not lanky.

Since the cold snap is just days ahead of us I would say hold, couple of days at cool temps is not going to make a measurable difference. I am sure with plants that size, you will get ripe ones by early June. I am shooting for the same.

For Lindalana, just trying to catch up here which isn't going to happen until new seeds are distributed to my seed producers and the seed offer goes up.

I was so glad to see that you are growing some varieties that don't get much attention,so a few comments first.

Perito Italian, an excellent paste I got from Dave Teney who got it from Matt Perito

Gruntowy, many of them from Poland, I was once sent 4 of them. Do you know which one you have?

Kuka's Portugeuse? Which one?. There's a red beef,PL,a heart, a red beef,RL,with wispy leaves, and a red paste,RL, which IMO is not very good. All from Jackie Tarbox in MA. My fave is the heart.

You listed a Striped Sweetheart, dark, with cherries, could that be what I know as Black Striped Sweetheart, which is not a heart, but an oval with outstanding taste.

And so many others that I recognize very well since I introduced them, also ones I didn't source but have grown them and also liked them and as for mine it makes all my efforts at sourcing varieties in the past worth it.

A fabulous list,really.

Carolyn

Carolyn, thank you much for kind words and references! Truly appreciate!
Gruntowy is from Robert Hoser, listed from Tania, 2012. Germinated really well.
Yep, Perito Italian is from Dave Teney, glad to know it might be another winner in pastes- love growing a good one as I do lots of varied canning.
Kukla Portuguese is RL beefsteak and is from Heritage, listed as from your seed source. It is third year repeat for me as I like it for being good reliable midseason red that so many people appreciate.
Striped sweetheart dark is from Casey's, am so glad to know it is going to be good as I had to bump down some good cherries/saladette to grow this one.
Thank you for finding, saving, preserving and sharing those treasures!
