Speaking of heroin withdrawals makes me think of Mississippi George.
He came back into town and had no place to go. He slid the front door open and I was on the couch asleep or at least he thought I was asleep. He said I could have had you right now in the dark. Really turn the light on. He turned the light on staring a 12 gauge shotgun in the eye. George was the only person I ever knew that got off the stuff and stayed off with the help and support of friends. He was a good guy. Most aren't worth killing. Worth |

My brother - who is a total heat wimp - asked me seriously why I am into heat. He said something like, "It's not like alcohol or drugs that are addicting." I replied that it's totally like drugs and cited endorphins. So now he thinks I'm addicted to booze and peppers. Fortunately his wife is Mexican and her mother eats habaneros for fun and profit so I have a place to send my crops and a person to sample pepper varieties with. (After sampling one of my mashes, her dad made me an honorary Mexican, a title I bear with pride.)

I have two ripe lemon drop peppers turned yellow and have a place for them tomorrow in a meal.
Maybe tonight. I also dug up more wild sweet potato slips and planted them in one of my beds not being used. Every time a vine gets long enough I bury it, every place it takes root sweet potatoes will form. What I am hoping for is perpetual sweet potatoes that come back every year by not harvesting all of them. Worth |

Been a busy day at Cactus Flats.
I thinned out the okra big time and moved the pulled up plants to a different spot. Live or die okra cant be that crowded. I will have to pull a few more plants soon enough as it is. Hoed up the part of the bed that wasn't performing to my standards and mixed in plant tone. Reinstalled the drip system to the okra patch. Watered the devil out of everything three times as the soil below was dry. Rose the skinny hippie gal stopped by to visit and asked me if I liked to drink beer and play cards and invited me to do that. I gave her one of the lemon drop peppers to try. After everything was watered with a hand held hose and the drip system running it started to rain. Fired up the trumpet and took it for a ride in the neighborhood to blow the cobwebs out of it in the rain. Runs great, forgot how loud it was. Put out poison for the leaf hoppers and grasshoppers. The first okra bloom will be open tomorrow. Smokey had a great two days with me home stayed at my side all of the time. Worth |

What is your poison for grasshoppers ? PS: I thinks some of my okras growing buds. Aren't they supposed to grow buds/flowers /fruits on the stem , like tomatoes do ? It has been quite a while since the last time I grew some okra, back in GA.

In the past, I planted okra 18" apart in rows 3' apart, but this year I planted some in a raised bed 18" apart with the rows 18" apart. Some have been reseeded and are just coming up. If we get any okra, it will be the first time since 2014. I have been eating HEB frozen okra for going on 3 years.

Speaking of okra, a new Golden Chick opened next to my Whataburger - within a short walk - so I stopped by for a menu. They sell good fried okra. Menus now have the calorie count on them, and I was shocked at the numbers. Their side dishes include Mac&Cheese (160), Battered Fries (272), and Mashed Potatoes (123). By a good margin, the most calories are in a serving of Fried Okra - 317!
Fresh Salad (206-276)!

After work shots of Cactus Flats botanical gardens.
You will see where a pile of the okra was transplanted. Sweet taters doing great. Worth IMG_20170522_43899.jpg IMG_20170522_55778.jpg IMG_20170522_9718.jpg IMG_20170522_20993.jpg IMG_20170522_34578.jpg IMG_20170522_47178.jpg |
