I, like Bully, have a ripe tomato. It's my Kimberly, and it ripened on Thursday, April 27th. It is in the ground but it had fruit on it when it went in the ground as so doesn't qualify to win. I have others that do qualify (I think), are in the ground, but are not ripe yet. (I need to go out and check on them today.)
I meant to take a pic of my ripe tomato, but I've been SO SICK! Ugh... Just found out I'm expecting our 5th child and I'm bound to suffer 3 months of all-day sickness. Blah! I will - asap - post a photo. Earl, Could you tell me the rules, please. I saw one thread on GW but Bully informed me that the rules had been changed. Thanks, Lisa

Ripe Kimberly - photo taken May 1st.
I checked on my other tomatoes and they look terrible! We've had way too much rain and the bed that I planted them in is holding lots of water. So..... I don't think I'll be the one with the first ripe mater this year. I guess there's still a chance, but... not looking good at the moment. I will say, I have learned a LOT this year with my potting up experiences, using different types of potting soil, etc. I do believe I can have the earliest tomato... ONE DAY. But for now, I'm counting on YOU, Earl! Lisa

Wow!
Five kiddies! Congrats. That's quite a harvest. Oh, and the Kimberly looks great. I know it's all weather dependent but I really enjoy its sweet balanced flavour in my temperate/humid climate. A must-grow.

I was a little disappointed in the flavor of Kimberly. It really leaned to the sweet end of the flavor scale, which I am not personally fond of, but as you said it is all weather dependent, so I am willing to give the Kimberlys every opportunity to impress me this season. I LOVE it for it's earliness alone and will grow it again. Lisa

Karma
that is the way it works. you set up the rules and then the rules hit you back. I get such a good laugh. this is all not fair anyway. I am up in Massachusetts. it is so cold outside. high today will be 50. not bad but i think nothing grows below 55. so it all just sits there. How can anyone in Mass compete with texas. well Karma is the answer. You texas growers better look out if you can not rip those red tomatoes off the plants. I plan on having ripe tomatoes by August 1st if I am lucky. and I will win this contest for earliest tomato. We have to change the rules so Mass and Maine growers can be on equal footing with Texans. Texans are discriminating against the Yankee tomato nuts. ****** I think there ought to be a law against anyone having red color on a tomato this early. but with george bush from texas he will not help us yankee growers. |

Hi Tom,
Well, Bully had the first ripe tomato, mine came in a close second, but neither of us won because of THE RULES, which are as clear as mud to me. Lisa

Lisa,
If that tomato was ripe on May 1, the date of your post, why didn’t you bring it to the plant swap to share with all the CHOPTAG folks? We are a sharing organization ya know. Maybe we won’t let you have any tomatoes at the Taste Fest. Or worse, maybe no pulled pork. So there!!!!

Jerry,
Take care... you are telling a sick, pregnant woman she should SHARE her first ripe tomato that she worked so hard for!! Watch out!! Really, it was a kindness on my part if you think about it. Sharing a little Kimberly with, what?, 30 or more people... 1/30th of a tomato! I don't think so... But that threat about no pulled pork really hits me where it hurts! Lisa
