Grub,

Can't seem to find a picture showing ripening stages, but you can see the pubescent stem on the blossom photo of the BG I grew 3 years ago:

My notes show that seeds came from Beth in TX and one C.L. in NC. No indication as to which source re the photos.

And hi to antipodean PP!

Glad you refound us here, PP. Hugs again from last night!!!

jt, that C.L. in NC would very likely be our Craig, nctomatoman! (BTW, I just found your email caught in my spam filter Glad you got my peppery package.)

PP, who was your source for the Billy Goat? JohnF has a Billy Goat Pink and/or Peach, unlike the typical red seen in the pic that jt has posted. Both are in JF's 2005 pod gallery.

I think that photos of pubescens seeds are there as well showing the range of colours they come in. Not your typical cream colour.

Interesting pic of Billy Goat - alas, it is crossed! This pepper is very tough to keep pure. I got it years ago through an SSE trade and though I've seen some crosses, I also have some of the real deal - or at least know what to look for!

They should not look like red Habs, as in the pic you posted Jen - but like small squat tops as my plants show.

Craig, that's jt who posted a pic not me. I haven't grown it yet.

Billy Goat shape, not colour. Hmmm...

And the flesh-coloured version of BG:

Of those three links, the middle one shows the correct form.

Man, do these hot peppers like to mix it up! My driveway appears to be a veritable Plato's Retreat for pepper plants!

Articles on (Billy) Goat peppers. Note shape.

http://www.fiery-foods.com/dave/goatpeppers.asp

and see especially glossary of terms by island:

http://www.fiery-foods.com/dave/spicy_caribbean.asp

Are we applying a varietal label 'Billy' to a class of peppers with various characteristics?

My understanding is that Allen Boatman's Billy Goat (per the first pic I posted) was brought back from the islands as such.

Turning into the Billy goat thread! Just checked back - I got Billy Goat from an SSE trade in 1994 from a Mr. Walker from Michigan. I sent Alan Boatman his start several years ago. Mr. Walker never did list it, I was the first in the SSE to share it around, so assume I am the original source of this (I also shared it around Garden Web quite extensively a few years ago).

Craig, I have Allen's inventory with sources. You are one of three listed under Billy Goat. Not sure which BG is shown. Others are JF and MR.

Is or is not that mystery pepper a Billy Goat?

Have mentioned thread to JF.

Jennifer, who did forewarn the terrier part of the cross...

plus I have a vested interest--have BG seeds from several sources myself and need to decide which to grow out in 2006

Default Billy Goat pepper

This pic at the link below, kindly provided above by Jennifer, is a dead ringer for the Mystery...

I'll endeavour to get a flower shot. They are very small flowers.

Great Goat thread

Ok, I'm not even going to begin to get into another debate about which is the real "whatever". I got my original Billy Goat from SSE member MA CR J who listed Craig as his source and described 1-1 1/5 " top shaped fruits. The first time I grew them was before I was taking pictures but my notes say red, small habanero type shape. The second time I grew it I got the Peach version and a lot of pod shapes on one plant

This year I grew out the original seeds ( because they were getting old) and got a red and a peach version( link above)

It would appear that the original seeds I received had been crossed. In all cases the peppers were prolific and very hot.

Default Cross Collateral

Hi John F,

Well, just maybe that explains it.

If the original red one is Billy Goat can we call the peachy one Nanny Goat?

Hope you stick around so this kid goat can learn a trick or two.

Cheers, Grub

Default Green Salsa

See, I was true to my word.

Grub's Mystery Green Salsa. Note how amber the skin is in parts.

Another day comes to a close and another idea is realised.

Shame this mater's not green

See ya 2morro... Grub.

Hi John,

Great to see you here! Am curious as to what you thought of Craig's Billy Goat picture. (squat one). I've seen that exact same pod shape before and thanks to computer gremlins may never find the picture I took.

Do you remember which traits are dominant when crossing peppers? Such as color, shape, pod size, heat, blossom color etc? I used to have a nifty chart, but can't find it.
