What is the difference between garden soil and top soil?
I forgot to ask that.

Every place has its own recipe'. Where I have bought some it wax made of:

TOP SOIL + COMPOST + SAND.

But I would hold the sand and just get 50/50 top soil/compost

You better be careful buying top soil you can end up with total garbage or good soil.
Garden soil is a blind of different things.
Your choice.
Your summers are more like mine from your description.
You will want it to hold water.
Some of the best plants I have ever seen came out of beds that had 50/50 sandy loam and compost.
