Favorite Garden Knife

As far as a favorite knife, I'm in the group of having too many to pick a favorite.

I guess just going by looks is my anodized knife. The old timer I gave to my father in the early 1980s is one, but I inherited it back. The 3" thin knife my mother gave me years ago opens all our seed packs. Our Old Hickory knives get used a lot in our mechanics building - they are also used in the wood shop. I use the Oneida Immaculate series knives in the kitchen, but mostly the chef's knife. A few novelty knives bought on long distance road trips. Also the aforementioned plastic handled steak knives for cutting tomatoes and peppers.

Yet, I don't carry a knife.

Everyday pocket knife is a Case Slimline Trapper aka Farmers Knife. The Case pattern has been used since the 1930's and is great all-around knife. Stainless Steel or CV are both good, I favor the chrome vanadium. This is my single favorite knife to give someone, mainly yellow.

I like all those knives pictured.
I am a self-declared chef and use very few knives in the kitchen. My traditional "chef's knife" does 90% of the jobs.
But in the garden, like i said before, I use pruner and scissors and I have my pocket knife too.
PS: I need a good fish fillet knife.

I have a case pocket knife that opens like a straight razor I always carry had it for years.

My current favorite is a $6.50 Budk knife off Amazon. It hangs around my neck and I love it! My pants pockets usually fill with all sorts of stuff during gardening - Sharpie, twine, clips, trash, etc. I usually have to sort through all the stuff to find my knife.

With the Budk - its always right there around my neck. I have a hori hori that I love for planting, a box full of penknives from grandfathers and my Father but I use the Budk more than any.

Next year I'll probably have a new favorite!

I also use an H1 steel Spyderco for the same reason--everything else is prone to rusting in the greenhouse. This is my primary, though I also have a straight edge and a half-and-half serrated/straight.

(In the kitchen I do 95% of the cutting between my high carbon 10" chef knife and my heavy duty 7" santoku cleaver).

I currently carry a Ontario Knife Company Model 1. My oldest son bought it for my last birthday. So when I need a knife in the garden, it's what I use. It holds an edge well too.

I love the Spyderco's show above. I don't own one, but my son collects knives and I have given him a couple over the years.

In the garden and for any yard work I use my old Swedish Mora knife with laminated steel blade. My pocket knife is an Enzo folder made 5 miles from where I was born in Finland. I keep them sharp enough to shave with.
