Cucumbers, What are you growing

Has anyone seen seeds for Diva in any of the stores? I should've ordered it, but I thought I would be able to buy it locally. I wasn't planning on ordering any more seeds.

Never have seen Diva at any of the stores around here in Philly...only the usual stuff...Straight Eight, Burpee Hybrid,Tasty Green, etc.

I've been looking for Diva on seed racks but no joy. I have seen Lemon and Marketmore '76, but no Diva.

Feldon,
Market More and Straight Eight are good choices for down there.
Market More did very well in Angleton and thats where I discovered it.
Both have a great cucumber taste.

I ordered it from somewhere???? but evidently they were out and substituted some other hybrid. I also have terrible problems with wilt carried by cuke beetles... I plant cukes every three weeks through the season just to get a good harvest.

I always plant Lemon... I really like it. In addtion, I'll be planting Bush Pickle, White Wonder and Straight Eight... same as last year.

I'm growing Rocky from Territorial for the first time this year. Just planted them last Sunday- perhaps today I'll see some sprouts...

Mudcat, Tell me more about White Wonder Pleez.......I had someone send me some WW in a Christmas Gift exchange. Googling only brought up a seed catalogue info from Britain, as I recall.
S. Indiana isn't much different from my area as far as growing. How did it perform for you last year??

And then there's CdnTomato's list. It just hit me now.. Delcrow?? Hmmm, based on my knowledge of how cultivars were named in Canada, could that be a cucumber developed in Delhi, ONT and grown at the Simcoe Experimental Stn?? Morden's an easy one

but I have started Poona Kheera and Lemon Cucumber in a 15 gallon pot. I am building a 6' x 4' trellis for them to climb. I hope that's enough for 3 plants.

I am planting Lemon and Boston Pickling Cucumber. I've grown these before, love their flavor and very productive plant's. I grew my lemon cukes on a trellis last year and they did great.

I love cukes and making pickles but the cuke beetles love them more than I do! They wipe me out every year, but I keep buying them cuke seeds. Must have a dozen types to try. :-) I may try to cover vines with remay cloth. Also going to try some in the greenhouse.

Have you tried buying some yellow plastic cups and mashing up some cucumber peels (especially at the blossom end) with some Sevin dust?

That was a remedy that was posited over at GW. I don't know what results there were.

And of course there are varieties like County Fair which are supposed to not give off the aroma that the beetles are attracted to.

I dont know that I have even seen a cucumber beetle, but making a puree out of peels with some flesh and adding sevin does sound like a plan. Will do if the problem presents itself, no hurt in trying. It would be interesting to hear results this season from people that try it. Maybe start a thread in the pest and disease forum and track results.

I grew DIva last year and it was great. I am growing it again this year as well as bushy cucumber from sse public catalog. Here is what SSE says:

"Introduced to American gardeners by SSE in 1992. Well-known older variety that originated in southern Russia. Recommended for dacha gardens that surround Moscow because of its compact "bush" plants with 3-5' vines. Good production, for fresh eating or pickling. 46-49 days"

Have never grown it (bushy cucumber) will see how it does.

I put a birdhouse right close to the cukes and had cukes all summer long..............I think those birds took care of them.
