This is an old thread, but I think this fits here. I have an insulated composter where I put all kitchen scraps. It performs well during warm weather, but using it winter time took some practicing. It is -15°C (5°F) outside currently, but the compost is running hot at 50°C (120°F). Week ago it was getting close to freezing in there, but luckily it started the process by itself and the temperature rose quite quickly.

I made this pile about a week ago. eleven pickup loads of horse manure with wood shavings and I added some ammonium sulfate.
Look how the snow is melting on it...my dog loves to sit atop the pile even when it is single digits outside! It's been below zero F the last few nights and it's still cooking. |
