I think the christmas balls are a pre-emptive. Train the birds not to bother with red before they have been rewarded for pecking red. Maybe next year. I have my doubts it would work on wild birds anyway.

Has any one tried a big plastic owl? I have noticed what looks like pecking on my apples. my tomatoes are not yet big enough to ripen (I live in chilly northern CA on the coast)

I have been thinking of putting the owl half way between the apples and tomatoes.

I bought the owl, my cats were initially freak-out by it, but it did not stop the birds and squirrels.

I picked these and laid them down in one of the raised beds, went into the house for a minute or two, came back out and a mocking bird had pecked them.

Once the mocking bird pecks a tomato I leave it on the vine and the bird will go back to that tomato instead of pecking another tomato. It took the bird three days or more to eat these two tomatoes.
