Last Friday I ordered the Moreton seeds from Rutgers and received them today. Pretty fast.

As I mentioned, I asked for a bulk seed price list. This is what they sent me.

I'll assume they have a "bot" set up that sends it out to anyone who puts the required subject line "Bulk Seed" (that they ask for) in their email. (See thumbnail image)

Too bad, since it's not a seed price list at all.

(See first PDF attachment)

NOTE: The second PDF is the correct order form to use for retail packets. Please download and print as needed.

Moreton and Ramapo seeds arrived today. Too late for spring, but will try for this fall.

I got my seeds today. Unfortunately they are Ramapo and I ordered Moreton? Does anyone want to trade? Do you have a few to spare? Something?

I wrote them and asked if they're out of the Moreton and just substituted the Ramapo. The Ramapo sounded late for my garden/season so I doubt if I'll even bother with them.

Barb, for what it's worth, both Moreton F1 and Ramapo F1 are both some of the earliest bred hybrids and both will do just fine where you live.

I've grown both here several times and no problem and your zone isn't that different from mine based on the varieties I know you grow successfully.

But if you've already grown Ramapo F1 and really want the Moretons then perhaps someone can help you, but not me b'c I don't have any fresh Moreton seed altho I do have some pre-2004 seed around somewhere, but I don't know exactly where right now.

Thanks Carolyn. And it's good to know that they're both earlier than the packet led me to believe. And I've grown neither.
You have more faith in my microclimate than I do! The first years I was here, everything was swell, but the last two years have been uncooperative. Even my Grandfather Ashlock which are surprisingly among the first of everything to ripen (that includes Stupicke) never ripened last year.
I shot an email to Rutgers and got a reply back saying they'll send the Moreton which they still have--everyone who might be wondering if it's too late to get them, it's not.
They packed the seeds well, sandwiched between 2 layers of thin foam sheet. Still went for the 42 cents postage even though it was a rather puffed up envelope.

If you missed out on Moreton Hybrid F1 seeds last season, hurry up and order them now from Harris, before they run out of stock again!

Is this a variety that's particularly good for the north? If not, what makes it a standout?

Three of the earliest varieties bred by Harris seeds were Moreton Hybrid F1, Supersonic F1 and Jet Star F1. I find those threee to have much better taste, great yields and smoother fruits than lots of hybrids bred later by others, and Harris has always had, in my opinion, great parents for these three as well as their later hybrids. And no, I don't know what the parental inputs are.

Moreton Hybrid was not available for several years b'c in the transfer of Harris germplasm to Moran Seeds a parent was misplaced. So many of us were so very pleased when Rutgers decided to resuurect two hybrids that had been unavailable for several years, and those two are Moreton Hybrid and Ramapo F1, also an excellent variety.

So that's why all the interest in Harris and Rutgers offering Moreton Hybrid and last year Harris ran out so that's why Mischka posted above.

Mischka, same for Supersonic F1, which became scarce last year too. Harris has them in stock now.

I have some beautiful green Moretons on the vine right now that I hope have a chance to ripen. We're past our "normal" (what's that?) frost date, so I'm watching the weather carefully.

Moreton will definitely be back in my garden come spring. Ramapo most likely, also. Going for flavor and production next year. That's it.
