It's not a problem for me, probably because I don't post much compared to many people. I have had PM requests - maybe 10-12 total over the years, some from high profile posters. I don't save seed in quantities that I would ever post in the seed trading forum, but I nearly always have enough for a few requests, and I don't mind sharing even without a trade. I think I have actually initiated a request no more than 3 times and once did not get what I requested. No problem. Certainly there is the potential for overuse and abuse as with anything.

I do understand that prolific posters like Carolyn and Ami and others with large inventories, will get way more requests for their hard-to-get varieties than they have time or inclination to deal with, and they have every right to request that they not be contacted for seeds. But still, many of us that don't keep huge seed inventories and don't plan to do official offers anywhere, are perfectly willing to help out a fellow tomato lover by PM. You can always say No. For people that definitely don't want to be contacted, maybe they could add a tag on their signature line, like "No PM's for seeds, please" or the like?
D, aboout your first sentence. I wasn't speaking on everyones behalf at all, and throughout my post continually referred to MYSELF and what I thought:

Posted by Carolyn:
Ami, I happen to agree with you, not just in this particular circumstance, but for anyone who sees what someone else is growing and then either asks outright in a thread or PM's the person.

It's happened to me and I don't like it at all. I like to report on the varieties I grow in terms of sharing information, not seeds, although as you know I'm one, like others, who usually does make a seed offer later in the year.

The way I see it if someone has seeds they want to share with others, either an outright so called free offer as I do, or a trade situation, which I never do, they'll do so by making a seed offer in that second seed forum here at Tville.

There was a time when I almost stopped listing what I was going to...)

All was about my view of the situation and anyone, such as you just did, should post about their view of the situation .

The more opinions the better as I see it.

There are a lot of folks here who could make seed offers in the Seed Forums, but don't, for one reason or another. To date, considering that all my initial seed offers were made at GW before TVille even started, if I added them up I think I rpobably have offered maybe in the range of 500 different varieties. And since starting here I've also listed most of the same ones that I list in the SSE Yearbook so that non-SSE members have a chance to get seeds.

But it's a lot of hard work, trust me on that. And now with the problem of the USPS rollers crushing seeds it's become even more difficult. If I accept requests for maybe 100 persons at 4-5 varieties/person, that's a lot of coin envelopes and packing, etc.

And I'm not putting a tag on my signature line. If anyone PM's me or e-mails me about seeds outside of my regualar seed offers I'll just say that I'm sorry, no can do.

From time to time I do get e-mail requests from some SSE folks asking if I have seeds for a variety that's no longer listed in the current SSE Yearbook, but that's a different situation entirely as I see it.

And from time to time I have offered seeds to those who post their specific wants in the seed Forum here, but only if I have relatively fresh seeds and I have enough of them for my seed offer as well as my SSE obligations re listings in any given year.

But I love to share tomato seeds with others via my to date yearly offers here at Tville and will continue to do so as long as I can and have the seeds to offer, which is dicey this year on the newest ones.

Carolyn, I know you have always been generous with your seeds and don't blame you a bit for wanting to deal with the work at a time of your choosing. I am not a very organized person and could not begin to manage distributing the numbers of seeds you are still able to offer. So no question in my mind of you being one of the pioneers in tomato seed sharing, and continuing on at present. My problem was, I interpolated when you said

it made me wonder if maybe this was a widespread feeling of many who post their results here.

Hats off to you Ice
Raising veggies for market is hard work! And Belgiums..now there is a beautiful work horse for sure. I have been keeping my eyes peeled for a mule. My hubby keeps asking me what I plan to do with it. I told him the other day, I want to pet it and put a big hat on him and hitch him to a cart and ride in the parades
He just shakes his head and mumbles LoLoL

I like you Barbee, so I am not going to tell you that my belgium is a prince,
However he is more of a mule than a horse!! He is the most foul tempered cold blood you want to meet, We call him Nipper and for good reason! He doesnt like work and he runs when you try to harness him, does not play well with others, and he is a gelding so that didn't work either, and yes it is very hard work, I just love my heirloom tomatoes and I thought this would be a good place to learn what I dont know, I f you can put a hat on Nipper he's yours!

Dee, I have no problem with PM requests and fill 99.9% of them. It's just when somebody who just got off the boat starts hitting people up for seed for trade or whatever, I don't think they have earned that right YET. Especially when were talking about camo's top ten and I've never heard of 4 of them nor could I find them listed in the SSE yearbook! I've seen where people come on board and have five posts and you get a PM requesting a new or hard to get variety and it's obvious what they are doing. That was my .1% not filled.
Newbee's who are just starting out no problem with getting them set up. TVillans are famous for that. It just seems that more people are joining to make a quick score and their gone. Nothing personal icelord and if you remind me in about 6 weeks with a PM maybe I can help you out. Ami

I just like to raise the best tomatoes I can! I didn't know I was rubbing people the wrong way, I dont NEED any seeds, I just liked all the cool ones that were posted. I think from now on lurking is the way to go!

Dean
Hey Dean,

No use just lurking. I enjoy seeing new members post. And you obviously have alot of enthusiasm for growing tomatoes, so look forward to your future contributions on the various forums here.

Regarding seed trading you'll find alot of members enjoy trading especially starting in the fall. My first year of seed trading was on GardenWeb, and I started out having 3 varieties of hot peppers to offer. During subsequent years mostly here on Tomatoville, I've traded for many varieties & purchased many others. Now have over 200 tomato varieties, along with other 'things', everything from pumpkin seed to eggplant seed. Probably at least 2/3 of my seeds came in trades. You'll find traders are very generous here as well. I've offered seeds in the past saying I didn't need anything in return yet people still offered different things they thought I might be interested in. Keep an eye on the appropriate forum and you'll probably see many varieties you didn't even know you wanted!

I think that's all Ami was trying to say. Just a hunch.

So keep posting dude....peace....

I'm always happy to share extras of seeds I have. And I'm not bothered by people asking on the boards or in a pm.

I guess one of the reasons I've not offered seed is because I don't bag blossoms. If I make a trade or fill a request with someone, I make sure they know up front that I don't bag blossoms.

I don't save a ton of seed, but I do save enough to do me thru a couple of years and extra enough to share with 2-3 people. If someone asks me for seeds before my harvest is over, I just save extra for them.

Ice, this is a great place to learn so stick with it and no lurking Once the snow starts flying, the real addiction comes out in all of us. That's when you'll see the board start hopping with posts.
As for Nipper, now that you've made me WANT him, you must post a picture! And put a cute hat on him too!

Barbee, I will give you directions and you can put the hat on him!! Then, I will take a photo of you both, He's just like a big dog...... A rabid big dog!!! I noticed that you also compost, that is all I use and shredded leaves, Also if some of my plants show blossom end rot, I go to the dollar store and buy Vitamin D pills and crush them up, a half teaspoon buy the roots works better than anything I have ever used!! New not, uneducated!!

Dean,

I was a tomato farmer for many years, and now that I garden only, I've tried many more varieties in zone 3, and have over 100 hundred varieties of seed to share, many that could also do well in your northern climate.

PM me, you don't need to "earn" any rights here. And besides, unless Ami plans on having his seeds inspected and a phytosanitary certificate issued by Germany, any seeds he may send is considering smuggling, which could "earn" you a $300 fine.

*nods*

I don't save seed on all the peppers I grow, but if someone asks early enough in the season, I will bag the plant and save them some seeds. If they ask too late, I offer what I have, with the caveat that they may not be pure.

Default Thank All of you

Thank you all, now that is what I thought tomatoville was all about!!!! I have seeds, I just like the fact that so many exist!! You all have such knowledge, and I am very hungry for that. I have alot of tecniques that I use for different veggies that you might find useful or comical. That other new guy that has nothing to trade, I am going to send him some of the stuff I have. I have always heard of Dr.Carolyn, and Tom Wagner, and Craig Lehoullier { I hope I got your name right Craig} and tryed to follow as much of their work as I could find, I went to school but it seems like the more I learn the more questions present themselves. I have been trying to finish my E-Book on gardening in Northern Mich only it never seems to be quite right or something new comes along or I don't like my Illustrations, or you found out you have spent money on things that are not what they say they are. In life when you are the teacher you always are just an older pupil. Thank you all. This is not me just dropping by, I am in for the long haul

"Hey icelord, this is Amideutch. You have been a member for less than a month and your hitting up everybody for seeds! Cool your jets, get involved in all the aspects of hobby and the seeds will come later. We got six months till planting time except for the folks in the Southern Hemisphere, so chill out. Ami"

I agree 100%. However, I luckily did not have any of the seed Icelord requested, hence I did not have to make an excuse. Welcome Icelord, hit me up next spring and I will give you a treat!

Just for the record, no one would have known I had a Ph.D and in my professional life was known as Dr. Carolyn until my book was pusblished. But ever since I started reading and posting online in 1989 I've signed off as Carolyn everywhere and that's what I prefer.

Not so many folks know that Craig LeHoullier also has a Ph.D, in chemistry, and he's always been known as Craig to all.

Actually there are quite a few folks online, and some here at Tville, who have advanced degrees who never use the titles they have as associated with their professional careers.

So, as I've written here and elsewhere before, I'm Carolyn to all.
