How long do you guys guesstimate

Whats the timeline for "mater developement" ?

That's a question for the experts, but I do know it is different for each variety. Of course the cherries ripen quickly after setting fruit and the beefsteaks take their time.

I'm guessing size is a big factor in determining time from fruit set to ripe.

I feel ya man!

I think you and I may be on the same schedule with this heirloom thing. Last year was my first year growing anything other than hybrids. I grew 8 plants total and 3 heirloom varieties. After tasting that first ripe Cherokee Purple, I was hooked.

This year I'm really blowin it out, (for me at least) and growing about 34 plants with around 20 some odd varieties.

Now if I can just get my Brandywine Sudduth's to stop dropping blossoms , I'll be good to go. Everything else seems to be setting fruit fine and I did plant a few extra's of BWS so we shall see.

Still extemely stoked down here in Tennessee 8)

RIK,

Yes, same for me ...
4 hybrids, 11 heirlooms last year -
This year, 1 hybrid (Brandyboy)
20 heirlooms ~ seeing a trend here ? lol ...
Brandywines seem to be fussy ~
My Red BW is one of the few plants that
does not have buds ~

Tom (who understands "stoked" ! lol)

Default do you pick them off or leave them

"Oooool righty then" can someone help me out. I have buds forming and have been pinching them off ,due to the plant is not more than 2-3 ft high and i want the energy to go in the root and foliage first ?
i have been told by others to let it go and grow . But i have heard others say no ,not yet.
When is the right time? to pinch or not to pinch?

My Bakers is doing good Valaree , abit skinny but growing good.
thanks

Tom, was it May 4 or so you planted? If so your harvest dates are easy assuming normal Jersey weather.

If you planted early tomatoes in pots and/or cherry tomatoes, the first will ripen around the 4th of July.

Earlies in the ground you may get a first by July 10, but definitely by July 20. Big beefsteak tomatoes will ripen in early August.

Ciao Tom,

Another transplanted Cali girl here. Don't let the weather harsh your mellow, man. Till then, just chill out n kick it with some buds, the kind you have a beer with, not the kind you wait to turn into a tomato.

You guys crack me up...I know what my kids mean when they say 'bud'...has to do with 'stoked', LOL.

Tom, the Red Brandywine shouldn't be picky like Brandywine. BW doesn't do well here for me, but RBW does just fine. A great tomato.
