Tom ***this may not effect everyone but it does effect me but again this is only when i eat several tomatoes per day.

tom
An on those days when the arthritis bothered, were those the days that you were out in the yard more? Bending over picking tomatoes, hoeing weeds and maybe toting some boxes?

Or maybe get a higher salt load in hot weather when eating those scrummy maters (like in the mayo slathered on that slab o' mater or the dressing)? LOL

Chery juice is tasty but I get better relief from 3 or 4 blueberries fished out of the pint jar in the fridge - it is sadly now only 1/2 full of last summer's blueberries steeping in awesome southwestern VA moonshine...

no it's a build up over a week maybe 2 of eating what i described. that's a lot of tomatoes per day for 7, 10, 14 days. and it is stiffness in my fingers not pain. i don't have arthritis but i suspect too many tomatoes causes this in me. it may be the bread, i mean we're talking about 5-10 slices per day (open face sandwiches) and i normally don't eat anywhere near that much bread. i always figured it was the tomatoes.

again we're all different, this is my experience. no problem last year, i ate some but not a lot of tomatoes due to late blight.

There is evidence to support tomatoes increasing pain in arthritis sufferers. Today I was getting my raised beds ready for my tomatoes and tonight the arthritis in my hips and shoulder is bothering me. This is not the first time although there has been times in the past where it bothered me after working in the big vegetable garden. Maybe vegetables in general are bad for you. I'm open to other opinions.

If you are not ordinarily a big simple carbohydrate eater (as in that bread), you will add a generous amount of water weight that you may be feeling/seeing in your fingers & ankles & waist. This is the weight that drops off fast when we tighten up on those carbs when dieting. Some people also notice finger/joint swelling in summer even w/o tomatoes - seems worse in humid areas.

I have found a sure fire help for that situation Ron. As soon as you catch your breath and are sure you are through using any dangerous tools for the day (like a car); put some ice in a tall glass, squeeze a little fresh lime juice over it, add a jigger or two of Bombay gin and fill to the top with good tonic water and sip until you get some relief. I have also found that wine will also work but it is a little slower acting.
CAUTION: This treatment may make you feel confident to go back into the garden and crank up the tiller. DON'T. Do not let this temporary good feeling give you more pain than you took it to relieve.

got a neighbor down the road up at the farm, an old finn who says he is sensitive to night shade. says if he eats potatoes too often it increases the aches. he feels it in his shoulders, and upper body. not sure about tomatoes. one thing i have learned, you don't argue with an old finn.

just want to add that dr joel fuhrman who is not your typical md has had success treating autoimmune disorders with diet modification. i'm not saying that certain foods cause autoimmune disorders, but i believe they can contribute to symptoms in certain individuals. traditional medicine treats autoimmune disease with drugs, and surgery with mixed results, and i have dispensed a lot of those drugs. i am certainly open to alternative forms of treatment that are less toxic or invasive.
apologies for the slight tangent.

food for thought.
