I grew Black Sea Man in a large container last year, and it had really good flavor. Some people have said that they didn't get much flavor out of BSM, so I saved my seed and will be growing it again to see what flavor I get this year. I think it might do even better in the ground.
Due to its determinate nature I could get all the tasty fruit before the worst of summer hit. Then I could rip up the plant and plant out a new tomato in July for our second season. Another OP determinate I liked was Golden Nugget. I actually didn't grow it- I only started 2 plants that I gave to my grandmom and mom- but I got rave reviews back. It doesn't have the flavor of sungold or coyote, but was really early and patio-sized, with a light sweet flavor. Those are the only OP/heirloom determinates I have grown. I grew some hybrid determinates, but the flavor was very bland. Some heirlooms still produced thruout the summer. My Green Zebra and Nyagos were the most productive in the heat. There are many threads you can find on the more heat-friendly varieties for Texas. I heard so much about Black & Brown Board that I am growing some this year, as well as Indian Stripe and other Cherokee Purple relatives. |
