If you want an outstanding semi-det very compact red heart variety try Danko. No long vines, vigorous growth and excellent taste.

I've offered it here in my free seed offer the past couple of years but there are other seed sources as well;

I know I was the source of seeds to Gleckler's and Sandhill and I think Victory as well although I can't remember without checking the site or my log book. Andrey also listed it in the Yearbook.

My seed source was from a friend of a friend who brought Danko and some other excellent varieties back from the CIS and sent them to me. Tsar of Bells, aka Tsar-Kolokol, a lovely pink heart was another one I've been offering here in my free seed offer.

And don't forget Anna Maria's Heart, a great pink, originally from the CIS and sent to me by a friend in Germany and named after his wife.

I now have various fruits from tomato "The Thing" - thanks to Carolyn for an appropriate name.

They aren't even all the same really - here's a pic of the group, and one sliced. I did make them into sauce, and it was ok - nothing to write home about. Of course, one might blame the cook too...

Carolyn could "the Thing" be Rostova? I planted several this year and got a lot of different shapes from mine. Most were like beefsteaks but some looked like hearts or plums.

If it is Rostova, what do you do with it (besides spitting it out) - or yours must be much better than mine.

Pretty name - I kinda like "the Thing" though.

No, the thing can't be Rostova, aka Sunset Red horizon, b'c it gives typical red hearts, at least that's what I thought from some feedback, and actually two were just sent to me b'c we figured since TF is offering it and obviously doesn't know what it is, it appeared to be an orpahn needing adoption, but it tasted lousy to me, just plain bland and useless.

Not all hearts are terrific, but whatever this one might be is really tasteless, at least to me it was and actually to the person who sent me those two fruits as well.

The fact that you're getting all kinds of shapes I guess from TF seed, is interesting.
