Indiana Red and Lincoln Adams

My apologies for misleading anyone. When I did my followup checks to make sure that things had grown true to type, I discovered that the tomato I had thought was Lincoln Adams was in fact not Lincoln Adams.

I am at a loss to know why. My seed planting procedures are solid and, in my opinion, not subject to failure. I cover each compartment of the 72 cell starter flats except the one being planted. I take the exact number of seeds to be planted out of the packet and place them on the cover near the destination cell. After they are placed in the starter medium, that cell is covered so that a dropped seed cannot be lost in the wrong place. I always use fresh, new Miracle Grow Seed Starter mix and fresh clean 72 cell trays.

I had no other problems with seed growing true to type. So, I have no explanation why this happened.

Lincoln Adams, which should be a large pink heart with potato leaf foliage, was not the tomato I grew.

No apologies needed, Ted, I think similiar things have happened to all
of us by now! Maybe it was a crossed or a stray seed in the packet-
I'm beginning to think tomatoes have a bit of a secret life behind our backs. I think you're very lucky to have found a great tasting tom!

Darlene, as Ted noted in his first post here, the seeds were from me form 2008 crop, as I recall. As I recall, and I'd have to check, I had both seeds from bagged blossoms and seed from unbagged blossoms.

I don't know what to say either, b'c it's the first instance of someone not getting what they should with Lincoln-Adams from my seeds, either from my SSE listing for it or from my seed offer here.

Which is why I'm asking folks to post in my feedback thread, tell me how many plants they put out of a single variety and if all were true or not.

Carolyn, Been thinking about what Ted said about Lincoln-Adams
being a pl heart; looked at Tatiana's and Gleckler's and both described
it as oblate. I wonder if Ted got a regular leaf plant or was expecting
L-A to be a heart-shaped fruit. Both sources say an oblate potato-leaf
pink.

Carolyn, I'm going to germinate the remaining seeds and see if they produce the same plant as I ended up growing. This will take a while, but I have sufficient time to get them to 1st and maybe second true leaves. Should be easy enough to tell a Potato Leaf from a Regular Leaf.

I really wish I knew what this thing I grew is. It is one super tasting tomato and I've saved a lot of seed from it.

Darlene, I went bac up and looked and I didn't see where Ted said LA was a PL heart.

I don't have any PL hearts exccept for the new one out in the garden right now. And Indiana Red is a heart, yes, but RL.

Te, if I'd looked at the poicture of LA in your first psot I could have told you it wasn't LA, but I failed to do that and I'm sorry.

I have no idea at all what that red looking small fruit is that you show in that first picture.

All I remember is that first batch of seeds I sent you from the seed offer never got to you, you were in the middle of moving, and then sent you a second batch of seeds when you let me know you didn't get the first ones.

I didn't send out that many seeds for a 2008 variety so if you want a few more seeds of LA for next year please let me know and then you can get a plant from your current seeds and whatever from seeds I can send.

LA is a hige beeflsteak large pink with PL foliage.

BTW, how many plants of LA did you put out this season and were they all the same, or did I ask that already? I jsut got up from what we used to call a nap, havern't been feeling all that great today, so may have missed something in reading/

And yes, I was the one who sent seeds of LA to Adam Gleckler and while I didn't take a look now I think I rememebr that they were fine as described in his blurb.

I thought he meant he got a large pink heart; At second glance, I thought

I guess that I had assumed it was a heart. Having seen Tatiana's pictures, I now know what it's supposed to look like. Primarily though, I knew that it must be PL or it wasn't the real deal.

Carolyn, I only had one plant and I was reluctant to put it in the main garden which was getting very crowded at the time and, instead, committed it to a container.

As far as other seeds, I will have some seeds coming your way and will include some return postage and a bubble envelope to send back to me.
Besides Maiden's Gold, I'm also going to include a couple of other varieties that are new or are new to most for your review. Save me a few Lincoln Adams seeds. After all this, I feel that I really must grow it.

I've walked down to the garden a dozen times to double check "possible" answers (including reversed maps and all kinds of other weird twists). This thing I grew is soooooo good that I want very badly to put a name on it. Otherwise, it will go into a portion of the garden that will be dedicated to commercial and home table uses next year. I don't want to put a fake name on it. There's enough of those renamed imposters around already.

Anyhow, I'll get the postman thing going in a few days.

Now you've got me confused again.

I thought the RL red heart you were growing was Indiana Red, which is RL and which you pictured in your first post and is correct.

The one to its right is what you labelled LA and it looks red to me and much smaller than LA for sure and not the right shape at all. Are you calling that one your OTHER red heart?

Yes, that's correct. Indiana Red (the one on the left) grew true to type.

This "Imposter" tomato has a pointy blossom end, especially early in its growth. I'm probably incorrect in calling it a heart, but it is not a smooth globe type and is definitely not oblate. Therefore, I've been referring to it as a heart type. Here's pix's of some of the "Imposter" toms still green on the plant.
