Carolyn! the improved version is so much different in texture and taste you would be amazed. I finally got your PSR-37 seed to germinate after 3 weeks and re-seeding my jiffy 7. Thought it would never pop up for me!!

Where did you purchase your "improved" version of Early Girl?

Last time I bought Early Girl Improved was as a transplant from Bonnie Plant Farms in 2007. I notice Bonnie Plant Farms now sells "Early Girl VFF" instead, so maybe it's been "improved" again. You'll notice that the Hume seed for Early Girl Improved is VF.

Peters Seed Research has been defunct for at least a year I believe. The last time I purchased PSR-37 was 2007, I think, and it was old seed at that time. The seed Carolyn has may be from an old batch as well, and I know it spent some time in transport and in the New Mexico desert before arriving in a cooler upper New York state environment. Point being, I had trouble germinating PSR-37 in 2008, so it wouldn't surprise me if it were even harder to germinate today.

Keep trying, it's a decent tomato but not as vigorous, long lasting or productive as Early Girl Improved which persisted in containers even in upper 90s temperatures. I've grown them side by side. The fruit was nearly identical, but I think Early Girl hybrid will do better in hotter climates and PSR-37 will hold its own in cooler regions. PSR-37 "petered" out on me when the temps got hot.

Travis is absolutely right that I was given the seeds by someone who had lots of them from Tim, and my seed donor does live in NM and he had also distributed seed for PRS-37 at another site.

And folks there were reporting back on germination this past Spring and for most folks it was excellent and some reported 100 % germination as I recall, from the same seed I distribted here.

As for me and my tomatoes, Early Girl in no version will ever be grown again by me after visiting CA to do a dog and pony show and seeing the adoration that folks there have for it, to the point where I think it should be declared the state fruit is there isn't already one for CA.

There are many fruits in California that might qualify

Carolyn, I read somewhere the folks in California don't even call it Early Girl any longer. For some reason they call it "Dirty Girl". I don't know why.

California is funny. May it stay that way:

We want people with college degrees, drug use experience and STD's
People with open-minded philosophies, come hug California trees
Cultural revolution now, neo-conservatives run outta town
We're gonna burn Orange County down,
And then we're off to Riverside, Bakersfield and Fresno too, then we're coming after you

Punk Rockers and emo kids, people doing things the church forbids
Buddhists, agnostics, and atheists we're moving out of jesusland
Art students and thespians, excluding country, all the musicians
We want all hookers and comedians, nihilists are welcome too

Hello Brog! wish you would have sent me a message since I totally missed you asking me on here until now. I have a counter full of tomatoes from early girl Improved as I am writing this and the only tomato I have to outproduce it is Bills Berkeley which I have F3 seed for now. Early girl is sweeter while B.B is a bit more complex in flavor, Both are very firm!! PSR-37 has been a dud for me and still waiting for fruit to ripen.
